She's closer!! 89 YJ project (long)
Ok, just thought I would share.
![]() Project has been a 89YJ. Picked it up for 2K about a year and 1/2 ago, shackle lift and 3" body lift (don't really llike the body lift, might cut it down to 2 or 1.5"). Had 3 of the 4 stock leaf springs bent. ![]() Had a 2.5 in her and ran ok just a chain draging sound. After I bought the YJ, I ended up replacing all the factory gauges with mech. ones since nun of the factory ones worked and doing some creative wiring to have the turn signal indicators light up. ![]() Traced down the chain sound to a cracked xfr case. Found one on the bay from a 94 with the SYE, replaced and no chain sound, hunted for a rear drive shaft found one, now looking at adding a cv joint type thing I have on a drive shaft from a ford, that's a later project and q&a thing. ![]() No front drive shaft and only part of the xfr case shifter, need to find a complete one and front drive shaft. After new 33x12.50s, drove her like that for a while, (was she really worth 2K???) Anyway the engine started being a problem. Tried looking at maybe a electrical issue, wow! going through the wire diagram and what was actually connected I could not figure out how she ran, the PO had all kinds of stuff not connected or just not there. Swaped out the ecm, no change, swaped out the TBI, no change. Finally did a comp check on the cylinders and found two of them low, like 3-4psi...LOW. Started looking for rebuild kit, then, found a 2.5 from a wrecked 92 for less than a rebuild kit, thanks hwyjeeper. So, now got the 92 2.5, from fourm member, picked up a complete wire harness, inside and out and the ecm from a 93, a fourm member. Picked up the fuel pump for the MPI engine, a fourm member. Picked up another harness for the alternator, a fourm member. Got a complete set of stock leaf springs, a fourm member. So got all this in the YJ, oh yea, got the speedo and tach cluster from a fourm member. And lastly, got a tilt steering colum, from IFSJA member, I also have a 83 SJ Cherokee. I also must thank JeepMoose for the pictures and answers to questions of vac line routing and some loose wire end points. Now, on to last week. Moment of truth, before this, I did shoot some MM oil in the cylinders and turned the engine over by hand to get things lubricated. I did replace the oil and antifreeze. I go to turn the key get emer. flashers but thats it. I get nothing... . I was able to jump the battery to a green wire going down to the starter and it did turn the enginie over but that was it.On to yesterday evening, been ranning down here all weekend and did let up some in the early evening. I thought I would splice in the stop light switch, switch is from the 89, harness frm the 93. I get to looking at all the connections under the dash and notice something. The connector that goes through the fire wall, just off center behind the engine, was not connected to anything inside the Jeep. So I hunt for its counter part, find it way over by the heater, plug it in. Slap in the newly charged battery, turn the key and HEY the "info center" above the steering wheel lights up and I hear the fuel pump prime. I will be at it again after work this afternoon, wish me luck. Oh yea, anyone have the part that connects into the top of the valve cover towards the back, maybe the PCV valve housing? I need that now, never had one.

Funny, my wife came out and and smiled, I turnd it off and smiled. She says, "Yep, now the whole neighborhood knows you are almost done with this project" (1 down 3 to go) I just have the down pipe on the exhaust manifold, need to weld the rest of the exhaust to it. A few things, on the 92 2.5, what goes on the top of the valve cover towards the back? I'm missing what ever it is. PCV valve? Also, right after I got the Jeep, I did the Tarus fan swap, now I just need to see a wire diagram, I have one wire loose and don't remember where it goes. Last, is a front drive shaft for a 2.5 the same length as one for a 4.0? I'm thinking yes since the trannys mount to just about the same location. |
