Shaking out of first gear

Had a problem today on the heep i need to diagnose:

When I was coming from a stop in 1st gear, the whole jeep began to shake...I couldn't really pin point where it was coming from. It was the kind of feeling when you have the rpm's too low in gear right before it stalls...only a 100 times worse. I stop, shifted it back into neutral then back into first, same thing again when I started giving it gas and eased off the clutch. I shifted it into reverse, backed up a bit then went back into first, problem gone.

This happened to me a few months back as well. any ideas?

Was maybe thinking that but would that be an intermittent problem like I'm having?..I would think that once the ujoint goes, thats it...i would have the problem all the time.

It cannot hurt to check. It sounded like it kinda fixed itself when you change direction, changing the angle of the ujoint in yolk and it just hasn't changed back yet. a pile of needle bearings can do this to ya. Just get under there and grab the driveshaft and see what it does.

even really ugly ujoints tend not to be all that noticeable right out of 1st gear. i had one that i cobbled together from 3 different dirty ones that i had thrown in to get me home off the trail and forgot about. a month later it was really bad but nothing noticeable just off the clutch.

what you are describing sounds alot like your clutch chattering. the only discrepancy i see is usually it comes on slowly and starts by being hardly noticeable then gets gradually worse. also usually once you have a clutch chatter it will always do it and not be intermittent.

Probably way off, but when my moms neon's sparkplugs were WAY too old, it did that REALLY bad shaking thing untill she replaced them... just throwin that out there.

Thanks fellas...

I'll have to check into it some more when I get home. I haven't had any problems with the clutch...still shifts very smooth in and out of gear.
