Hardtop is back on for winter and the last important interior pieces (trans plate and shifter boots) were bolted down today

I'll have to touch up the edge when I get a chance.

It'll be off for inspection again this year shortly. At least I have a half month to spare this time unlike last year.

I wanted to try and fix my ongoing rough idle before I took it for inspection. I've tried just about everything and decided to reset the timing chain to see if that helped. Here's what I found when I pulled the timing cover at TDC

180 out. I kicked myself for not double checking this last year when I did the chain

Got the camshaft turned and aligned

I knew my vibration damper bolt was in bad shape but didn't realize it was this bad. Ended up running a tap through the crank and putting a new 1/2-20 bolt in there. Tightened down good enough

All said and done the idle was a lot smoother but I still have a stumble when I first hit the gas/on takeoff. At least the motor isn't shaking the whole car at stop lights anymore

I couldn't get my inspection scheduled this week so I decided to start doing tests on the motor since fixing the timing. Started with pulling the plugs and did compression (again)

Not promising.

Cylinder 1. 120 psi

Cylinder 2. 100 psi

Cylinder 3. 60 psi

Cylinder 4. 100 psi


Cylinder 1 is really the only good number for a dry test. Cylinder 3 just sucks.

I'm gonna look into options for replacing the 2.5 I think. Even if I pull the head and get that looked over the rings might be toast. Maybe I'll run a wet test to try and isolate the problem between the rings and the head before popping on a new motor.

Ouch 60 is no good, ever think bout just putting a 4.0 in it? Pretty easy to find a 4.0 at a JY around here n it would allow u to upgrade to a better tranny as well. Just a thought, u could bore out the 2.5 n rebuild a little monster. Don't think that we b cost efficient tho. I do see 2.5s on craiglist quiet a bit around here tho, u might b able to find one sum1 pulled out to put a larger motor in.

How's that seat mount bracket/nut that you welded holding up? Looks like mine needs repaired as well.

You need to check it wet by squirting some oil down inside each cylinder and rechecking it. You could have a valve/lifter issue or a ring issue.

I've thought about putting a 4.0 in it since i've had the jeep haha. But all things considered I have 4.88s r&p's sitting in my garage for regearing and I don't want to get into that much of a project at this point. I could always sell the 4.88s but I would need a parts jeep to do the 4.0 swap (just easier), and I don't have the space to have it sitting around. I'm talking to a couple of buddies about good machine shops around the PGH area so I'm starting there.

Yeah it's holding up fine. Yours looks exactly like mine did before I welded it back up. I was concerned when I was wrenching the bolt back down when installing the seats but it didn't break.

And thanks about the bedliner. I was real happy with how it turned out and hopefully my floor will be protected from here on out

Honestly I think it's both Que. But I plan to do the wet test tonight after work. I didn't have a chance to check it this weekend and was too lazy to mess with oil when i got those numbers

I also had to organize the garage for an upcoming winter project (gotta get some work done to the 93 to get it roadworthy )

I got the whole tailgate corner area ripped apart. Maybe now I can finally put it back together before the next disaster hits! LOL I need to do some cutting on the fenders for the Xenon flares. I am not just feeding your ego. You do great work. The welding thing bothers me because I really am just learning and my welds look like crap.

Much appreciated Until I started welding on the jeep I old had a semester welding course in high school. I just took my time and learned as I went because there was no way I wanted to pay someone else to do it. It's not perfect at all but serves my purposes. I'm sure you'll do just fine if you do the same

Are you using a mig?

Yes. I got a lincoln 140 with a full bottle and cart for 350. I want to do it myself but its always god to have someone who knows what they are doing to help. I am with you on paying someone besides it kind of something I take pride in when it's done knowing that I did it.
