So after rolling the jeep into the sunlight I noticed my tires may be shot

So I ended up canceling the inspection to get tires. My brother schaef81 found some in Harrisburg for 300. He was nice enough to run out and grab them before his trip out here to pick up his 8.8 that I had previously picked for him

They're falken Rocky Mountains with good tread life on them yet

He also brought the spare frame I was going to use for the 93 before I sold it. I'm still on the fence about either selling it or keepin it

It's in for inspection and tire mounting


Found out I only put 1,725 miles on it since October 2011 lol

Hey man if u plan on selling the frame let me know, I'd prob b interested. Looks like the jeep is coming along nicely, sucks the tires were that rotted but that's pa for ya. Don't feel ba about the miles, I've only put around 1800 on line in 2 years lol. But I drive it everyday, just not very far.

So I'm pretty bummed after a series of unfortunate events happened this afternoon

It failed inspection for front brakes. I'm thinking no big deal I'll have it done today and bring it back. Advance didn't have the parts so I had to run to autozone.

On the highway my rear driver flare busts through all the bolt pockets and I see it flapping wildly in the wind through my mirror. I pulled over in time to tape it down but it pissed me off because I've been dealing with these **** flares forever.

Next I get to autozone and pull in a spot and hear alot of grinding coming from my trans hump. Crawl underneath to see this

My front input bearing in the trans must have given up the ghost. :Brickwall: So I limp it back home with gear oil spilling out the whole way. My clutch was slipping and is probably ruined and I'll have to replace the transmission sooner than I intended.

This whole thing has been one of those "take the wind out of your sails" deals

I took a pic of the new tires mounted, but the JF app keeps telling me it's too big. It's back to wrenching tomorrow morning. Shop said I had 7 days to do the repair and come back so I have to get moving.

It its so easy to get frustrated with the amount of sweat you have in to it. They are small set backs compared to everything you have done. You are still in the shake down for it. You might have a few more surprises but it will run better with a few more miles and a little more sweat.

Weekend Update

couple things i forgot to mention about inspection. My tires ended up being dry rotted on the inside too. I couldn't snap a picture when the mechanic was showing me, but it was split from the bead straight down to the tread. I've never seen anything like that before and the mechanic said its very rare, so I'm glad I got new tires.

Saturday morning I started by running to the parts store to get fluids and any parts I could possibly need. I ended up buying a clutch kit, transmission input seal, rear main seal, and transmission output seal Friday night in preparation. Only ended up picking up the clutch and the input seal after inspection saturday morning.

Here's a picture of the transmission I picked up last winter for 75 bucks. The guy had it hooked up to a mercedes 4 cyl diesel in his YJ . That's why the bellhousing is cut up


I had deja vu with the transmission input seal. The old one was completely toasted. Replaced with National #1981 (Timken #1981 went into my previous trans). I'm glad i remembered that number because the parts store guy couldn't find it in the system (surprise there). Cleaned up the cover, new rtv and installed


This was the status by the end of Saturday. I had about 4 hours into the removal (had some craigslist dealing to do that morning too). The original one on the left, the "new" one on the right.


I ended up messing around with spinning the input shafts and listening to the transmissions. The "new" one sounded alot tighter and quieter than my old one. I could definitely hear a bad bearing noise inside when I turned it.

I also noticed that the clip holding my throwout bearing was completely off and laying in the bell. It was also all wet again with oil (unknown origin, but probably my valve cover)


This ended Saturday with the plans of swapping everything over between transmissions in the morning on Sunday.

Weekend Update: pt. 2

Woke up early on sunday and headed down to the garage with the intent that it would be an easy day, boy was I wrong.

I started by trying to swap the bellhousings. The donor trans' bell came off really easy so I was under the impression that the old one would be the same way.. nope.

The impact wouldn't work and nether would the breaker bar. I decided to break the heat out to heat the aluminum in hopes that would free the bolts. This worked great until my 13mm 6pt socket cracked in half and completely rounded off one of the bolt heads : After wasting time trying to drill/grind i came to the conclusion that my drill bits aren't worth **** when trying to drill out bolts, and my cutting disk couldnt not get in the area.

Ended up welding and nut onto what used to be a bolt head, heated up the trans housing extra long, literally gave the socket a kiss for good luck, and it finally broke free lol. Pics of success


I got the donor trans installed, then the transfer case. I found it a little easier to do while they were apart (less weight to try and move around). I then remembered that I had to cut one of the bolts to the skid, so I reconnected most of the wiring and stopped there. I wire brushed the frame where the skid bolts up while everything was off and painted with rustoleum. Here's the only picture of install since I was trying to move as quick as possible


And I just remembered I forgot to add the picture of the new tires on the jeep (if anyone is interested)


Since the shop has given me 7 days, I will be working on this after work (hopefully not every day) until the deadline on friday. I just need to get a replacement bolt and keep moving.

I didn't even get to the work that failed it for inspection yet either lol. Hopefully that isn't going to give me problems but it's only a brake job (famous last words).

Well it passed inspection last Friday. Since then I've been checking over everything before i start driving it to work.

One thing I noticed about the trans swap for those interested..

When i swapped all sensors over to the new trans i didn't think about the differences in electrical systems. I guess the shift indicator hole is supposed to be plugged on the new YJ transmissions because while it was in there I could not shift into 1st, 2nd, or reverse. It struck me that the newer YJ speedo and tach are electrically controlled. So I removed it after thinking that it could be the reason it isn't shifting and saw this.





I guess there was an internal change between ax5 years. Or I just screwed it in too far. Either way I removed it and replaced it with a plug for now and everything shifts fine. Who needs a shift indicator that lights up at 2000 rpm anyways

I've also been replacing fluids. 10-30 in the trans, new ATF and output seal in the tcase, topped off the antifreeze (overflow and rad), and did an oil change last night.

I ended up checking the hoses because I could smell antifreeze when I drove it to inspection and found a broken clamp on the tstat housing. I've never seen the screw type clamps fail like this, just thought it was strange. Going to pick up a new one today after work



I'm planning on doing the differential fluid in the rear as well as a new pinion seal sometime soon. It's been leaking/seeping since I started this project and since then I've been focused on higher priorities
