Bad news bears..

Ran another compression check with some unsettling results

#1 - 10 dry, 10 wet (no joke, checked it 7 times)
#2 - 110 dry, 130 wet
#3 - 60 dry, 65 wet
#4 - 110 dry, 140 wet

Only thing I've done to the jeep since the first compression test was seafoam it and replace the plugs.

I even let it run until warm and checked number 1.. Still 10. I pulled the plug wire and started it, and it ran like I never even pulled the plug wire. The plug looked like this after I shut it off for the night

Dripping gas.

The only thing I can think is that something happened in the head after I seafoamed it. The numbers point to the head as well for number 3.

The head will be coming off

Not yet. Pull the valve cover first and check the valves lifters etc. first.

As bad as you say it is it should be obvious. The valve will not be closing if it is a valve issue pull off the cover, remove the plugs and slowly turn the engine over with a wrench on the pully damper. Check the valves as it is turning. If it is a bad vavle it will be a broken spring or a bad valve either bent and not moving as much as the reset or a burned valve. You still might have a bad piston but you might luck out.

Pulled the cover today. Found some white-ish stuff under the cover

image-261090902.jpg

I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. No bent pushrods or broken springs

I rotated it and watched the lifters and looked for valves to drop. I could see the intake valve come down but couldn't see the exhaust through the spark plug hole. Idk what else to do but pull the head and see for sure.

I did another comp test on that cylinder and got 15. I think it might be a burnt valve

Seeing that you drive this thing....never...the white coloration in the oil could simply be condensation.

The white is too small of an amount, its condensation. If you cycled the engine through 1 rotation and looked at the intake and exhaust valves on the cylinder that gave you the bad readings it sould be obvious if they were stuck open. You are looking strait at them as they push and release. That leaves either a bad valve or bad rings.

lets just hope it's not the rings. I should be pulling the head on friday so we'll see what surprises my jeep has in store then.

Pulled the head tonight and found this at the start. Can't tell if its old or gas but it smells like gas

3 has a sunken valve if you look close and 1 looks fried

Cylinders bores look real smooth and found my pistons are .030 over

And the head is ready for the machine shop (once I find one)

I have read the entire thread you have on here, and I have been enjoying the progress you made, and the documentation of the floor project.

I bought my 88 YJ from a friend for $100. He was going to give it to me for free, and i told him I had to give him something for it.

Well it is a project itself. The floors are in bad shape. I have welded in most of the passenger side floor already, but i need to finish it off, and there is some body cancer, and some frame rot that i have not tackled yet.

I just bought a new house with a garage, and it is in the middle of the garage, ready to be worked on, just need to find the time here and there to work on it.

Thank you sir! And congrats on getting your jeep.. seems you got a good deal regardless of throwing your friend a bill

I think i'm in the same boat as you about the jeep sitting around. I have a hard time juggling between jeep time and work a lot of the time actually
