safety neutral switch

Hi does a yj with a manual trans have a safety switch i googled it and some say yes some say no the manual says it will move if the clutch is not depressed a bit confused ...Thanks. also it looks like my 4wd light is on when in 2wd and goes out in 4wd whats up is something connected backwards 6 cyl

My manual 88 with the 2.5L does not have a neutral safety switch (will start in any gear) also does not have a clutch safety switch (will start without pushing the clutch). I don't think any manual YJ had either of these safety features from the factory, but I think the automatic YJ's have a neutral/park safety switch, where the automatic needs to be in N or P to start.

Nope, just the autos like Mike said.

As for the 4WD light, it's vacuum actuated, it's possible something got swapped around in there at some point. There's a vacuum diagram in the FAQ's at the top of the page.
