Rust fix question

I've got a hole in the body right next to the parking brake, a pretty common spot. My neighbor has a plasma cutter and he offered to cut the rust out of there and do a welding fix on the hole. The question I have is, what kind of sheet metal should I look at when fixing the body? I've never welded before, but I figure this would be a good introductory.

Not to mention the body doesn't match the frame that doesn't match the engine...

the tub is made out of primarily 18 gauge steel. i used 16 gauge for much of my repairs. you dont need stainless or galvanized or anything like that.

use 16 gauge, a little thicker so it's stronger and easier to weld. Just spot weld it and jump around to reduce warping. Practice on a spare piece, it's easy to burn through.
