Rough Idle 4.0

this jeep iodles rough, but when you give it gas bringing the rpms over 1000 it smoothes right out.
i put new plugs, cap, rotor, fuel cleaner. any suggestions?
where can i get the computer read for codes without paying an arm and a leg? is there a way to get the codes from the computer without having the expensive equipment?

did you reset the computer after installing all that? (disconnecting the battery, then restarting the vehicle and letting it idle for 5-20 minutes..)

the way to pull codes is turn the key on-off 3 times.. then the engine check light with flash codes.. and you can read the codes outta your haynes manual which lists them..

rough idle is one of several things.. plugs, cap, rotor, wires, throttle position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, or O2 sensor..

since you've already replaced the cap, rotor, and plugs.. i'd look at the other 4.. hopefully it's something simple like O2 sensor, wires, or the TPS..

it's my understanding that the CPS is a pain to replace..

Check for a code reader on http://www.summitracing.com someone told me they have a reasonable reader. I hate computer controlled engines for just that reason. There are so many things that can cause a rough idle from a bad O2 sensor, a crank sensor, the throttle position sensor, throttle body... the list goes on and on.

The only way to figre it out, without swapping a lot of parts, is to get the codes read.
