I did the same thing on my drivers side a few weeks ago. Ended up stacking tack welds onto the end o the broken bolt to get it where I could grab ahold of it with a pair of Vice grips.
Both of them Came right out like that. Replaced with a brown dog mount and now it should never happen again.
Plan to do the passenger side one of these days when I get some extra cash.
I haven't wheeled this jeep at all since I swapped the 4.0 in, so mine just broke off from driving down the road.

I wonder why this happens? Bolts in the block loosen up and loose their preload and all the shear an moment forces go directly into the bolt boss...

I've spent a lot of time studying this problem. On Wranglers, the failure is nearly always the driver side (barring unusual impacts). On Cherokees, the failure is on the passenger side. The length of the engine brackets on the driver side of a wrangler are longer than those on a Cherokee; the length of the driver side arms in either case are longer than the passenger side. The driver side brackets complicate the issue by being canted to provide space for the manifolds; the passenger side arms are at a right angle. The point is that there is asymmetrical loading on the brackets (weight x arm = moments of force). The driver side bracket of a Cherokee is just enough shorter to make the passenger side more vulnerable. There are a lot more considerations than I want to go into here. The bottom line is that it is very prone to failure. We sell a lot of brackets every week to repair this failure. At least one phone call every week or two starts out with "I have an unusual problem" ...no, you don't.

...and don't get me started on the ridiculous "clean sheet design" 4.0 that was introduced in Wranglers 2000. The bosses on that engine are bubblegum.

Alright really great advice guys. Yeah I can see how extracting these bolts is easily the hardest part about this whole job. I definitely don't want to pull the engine if possible.
These brown dog brackets, is it safe to install them without the bolts that would normally go into the block that the old bolts are broken into? So I'm guessing you guys were talking about installing these brackets, and just leaving the old broken bolts as they are without trying to extract them. Seems like one of the best options, although I'll most likely give the extraction an attempt anyway. I don't want to compromise any safety in doing this though.

It is perfectly safe. Every week we sell brackets to someone who is using them as a repair for the problem you have. I always advise them not to waste the time of extracting the bolts, unless it looks like a pretty easy job. I have never had a report of a failure when using these brackets as a repair.

I used a small bit to drill mine out and then tapped square tip bit in the hole and they came right out. both sides of mine have been broke and both frame mounts have torn off the frame before. sucks.....

Are the stock bolts grade 5 or grade 8? I might upgrade mine just to make sure they don't snap off on me. Sounds like a pain in the *** project.

i need some brown dog mounts that adapt a 302 to the wrangler 4.2 spot, ha ha ha. i know how i drive a 302 so after i blow up the rear end, i don;t want the engine falling out.
Brown Dog, you guys ever thought of making adapter mounts to put other engines into the wranglers/cjs? the common motors like the sbf and sbc? i know novak and advanced make them but any slice of the adapter pie puts more money into your company

New addition to the site here. Just came across this thread searching for info and decided to add to the pile of broken Jeep mounts. I have a 2006 Rubicon and my driver's side engine bosses broke and bottom bolt sheared off a few days ago when I was turning into my carport and hit a small pot hole. Brown Dog mounts have been ordered. Really hope it does the trick.

Try to get that snapped bolt out. The more holes you can use with the brown dog mount the better. My top boss looks the same way and the brown dog mount did the trick. Great part

I've got the snapped bolt out. Thinking of having 2 studs welded in the place of the remaining bosses up top for a little added security. What's your thoughts on this?

Not worth the trouble. You are going to be more than fine as you are. I could probably give you a list of over a hundred customers who have recovered NONE of the original bosses and have had excellent results.
