Rheostat/cab light question.

So I believe my rheostat as taken it's last road trip, and I understand one can jump the wires on the back to just keep the instrument panel lights on full, which is what I had them running at anyway. The question is, my dome light in the back of my hard top is connected to this as well as the cab light under the dash by the e-brake. If I jump the wires will these remain on as well when the headlights/parking lights are engaged?

It's an 87 if it makes any difference.

I intend to buy a new one, but I was hoping to use the wire jump fix until I felt better about shelling out 100$ on a tiny switch. I guess I'll pull the dome light/cab light plugs until I get a new one or clean up mine. Dash lights are much more important that cab lights for me.

Also, the google link is for a different part, looks to be the hi/lo beams switch. Thanks for the link to the service manual.

Check part outs in the classified section. Better than searching through the junkyard for a Yj and shipping will be cheap.

I had to go to ebay to get my rheostat. Got it for 25$. Make sure your search specifically for the rheostat switch. Otherwise you will get the hi/low beam switch as you saw.

I think wiring around that rheostat is a pretty good idea. If you upgrade your dash gauge lights to LED's, the rheostat no longer functions anyway. And those brighter gauges are very nice and an easy mod.

I'm planning on doing the LED's anyway, I may just wire around anyway unless I can get a rheostat cheaper than I can a good dome/cab light switch.

I added some gauges that have LEDs. They were too bright when wired into my lighting circuit. I just took some resistors and mixed and matched till I got what I wanted for light output. Very easy to do.

Here's the jumper wire positions you need if the switch is bad.

Try and clean the one you have. use some contact cleaner on it first.

If it doesn't clean up, you can get a pretty inexpensive pull-out style 'universal' headlight switch with the same functions. it mounts in a 3/8" hole; I think a simple homemade sheet metal delete plate riveted over the factory switch opening will do the trick. There is no way I would spend $100 on a simple switch!

Yeah I intend to attempt to clean it up this weekend(thurs and fri for me), if it doesn't work, i'll jump it or try to find a replacement. Got a line on one though the wrangler forum in the part out section. He's asking 45 shipped for the rheostat + the tailgate door latch handle. I may do with just the rheostat, I can get a new handle for 10$ shipped total elsewhere.

Thanks for the picture brentd711.

Well, pulled off the dash and pulled the rheostat. Gave it a good cleaning. Nothing. So tried to jump the wires, again nothing.
