removing cat and replacing it with new one

ok i know this is prolly a way overasked question but here it goes..when removing my cat. the downpipe is not welded so i got that out but the section where the cat goes into the muffler is stuck not welded but rusted in. can i cut that with the sawzall and put a new one in or will the left over section inside the muffler area remain in and cause me problems if it does what should i do i got the clamps off and everything is ready i just need to remove the cat from the muffler and am trying to think of good ways how

Peice of cat left in the muffler? There are several inches between the cat and muffler. Just cut it as close to the cat as you can.

OK, someone must have modified it then. On mine the muffler is lined up just about where the rear side of the skid plate ends. The cat is on the other side of the skid plate by the transmission.

Can you get a pic of the cat and muffler? It's hard to say what I'd do without seeing what's going on. If you can weld then it should be pretty easy. If not then there may be a way to save the mufler, or there may not.

No vehicle inspections in your state? I had to put a cat back on my YJ to pass the inspection. Good Luck

The cat converter is a Federal law, so it doesn't matter what state you're in. If the vehicle had one originally, then it has to have it forever, even if they don't do a tailpipe sniff test on your inspection.

True, but why would anyone check If your vehicle isn't subject to emission testing?

Anything in my state past 1996 is not subject to emissions.

I'm fairly new to the state, but I thought I had to get an emissions check recently to renew my plates?
