Bits of black plastic. It was in inside the shifter, around a u-shaped piece of metal. I assume it "was" a plastic bushing of some sort? Anyone know what it's called, and where I can find a new one?

yes it is a rubber bushing piece that keeps the 2 piece shifter tight. you can get them at the dealership along with the metal clip that the rubber piece goes in. it is not very expensive and you may have to look at a blowup drawing of it at the dealership to find the pieces. my dealership had to order it.
