Easiest way is to drive it til the shaft breaks and let it fall out.
Or, if you're in a hurry, take out the cross pin, spider gears then push the shaft in toward the center. After that you will be able to remove the c clip from the end of the shaft.

One more question. I believe I have to remove this small pin to remove the cross pin, correct?
If so I can't seem to get it out. Is it a pin, or a screw or what?

He doesn't have a c-clip type axle. The early YJ D35's did not have clips. There are 4 nuts that hold a bearing retainer plate on behind the axle flange. Once these bolts are removed, the axle will come out. To change the seal you need to have the bearing pressed off the shaft. So you might be better of replacing the bearings and seals on both sides. And for future reference, you don't need to pull the diff cover to remove an axle shaft on non c-clip axles.
The nuts are circled in the pic below. There is a hole in the axle flange so you can access them.

X2!
Leave the cross pin in the carrier.
Removing it does nothing for getting those non-C clipped axle shafts out.
