rear tires toed out..

My rear tires are toed out at the bottom, making the axle appear to be bent downwards in the center, but after checking it several times, it isn't. The wheels don't seem to have any slop in them, which makes me think that there are no bearing issues, as is also that the seals aren't leaking. Anybody have any ideas? I will get a pic asap.

Get a straight line under the rear end the check it ,sounds to me the rear end is bent it would be nice if you could get it on a frame rack to measure it.

Can't imagine what would have bent the rear axle though. Haven't taken it off road in several months....

If its a D35 you could have driven over a curb roughly or hit a pothole just right and bent it. The axle tubes are really poor on them.

I had to have my D35 housing straightened when the locker was installed. Years later it was noticeably bent when it was pulled for the D60 install. While I wheel some pretty rough trails I drove it real easy for fear of breaking it. So yes, the housing is weak.

I agree that a bent axle housing is the only thing I am aware of that would cause that problem.

If it is bent enough to cause uneven tire wear I'll bet if you get behind the jeep the bend might be noticable to your eyes. Post a picture.

Try, jacking it up just to make sure your c-clips didn't come off or that you didn't twist or break an axle shaft. Hate to see a Thread "SAW my Wheel and axle pass me on the HIGHWAY!"

I know this picture sucks, but I keep forgetting my camera at the office, so here is my cell phone pic. You can see that the left wheel is pretty tweaked, but I am unsure if it is the tire itself, as these are used tires (although not that used), or if it is the axle. These tires have been on here for about 9K miles. Never noticed this with the stockers on there, but who would?

it does look like the drivers side is tweaked. see if you can get a pic of the axle its self. if the axle is tweaked, what are the chances you have a junk yard near you could get a new axle at?

My 1st 35 (factory) kept giving me problems. I just got a junkyard one to replace it ($150). I didn't have access to a frame machine, or any jig. I put the old one on a set of steel sawhorses a rolled it around. It was really noticable with the backing plates moving back, and forth.

In that pic, it does look bent.

The last junk yard to get a jeep around here waited 2 years to get it, and then sold the rear axle for $1400. It was a TJ. I think I will just go after an 8.8 or a 9. After all, if I have to buy a new one....might as well go big(ger) or go home!

yep..looks bent. d35s are a dime a dozen. try finding one for cheap, and if you cant just upgrade to a ford 8.8. find somebody who doesn't know what theyre worth for jeepers, and buy one. me and my friend each picked ours up for 200 bucks. great buy

I bought a 94 Wrangler a couple months back, and my rear wheels did the exact same thing. After measuring the differential housing tubes, it was bent... and it was leaking fluid from the left tube where it attaches to the differential. I bought a used housing this last week and I'm changing it out this weekend. We are swapping the same gears into the new housing so I don't have to worry about a missmatch with the front differential.
I talked to a couple local shops about bending the housing back into shape, but they advised against it, especially since it was already leaking.

search around for an 8.8 with matching gearing to your front. thats what i did, i got a 8.8 with 3.55's and didn't have to re gear. it saves a lot of work and down time. look around at you pull it yards, the one that i go to has $50 rears, that is disk to disk. also while you are there, see if you can find a drive shaft out of a late model 4wd ranger, its a hell of a lot better than ******* the cost of a new part (about $50 if i remember correctly). there is also some ford van with the part, but i have no information on that. good luck with it.
