I would recommend using 1/4" or plus steel. Especially if you want to add a recovery point or a hitch receiver.

Someone pointed out to me the rear cross member can be replaced by using the stock front bumper as a replacement more than strong enough and readily available.

I agree with making a new, beefier crossmember and calling it a day. the factory one is tinfoil. You can use angle iron or plate steel. Personally I ended up making a new rear bumper and just welded it straight to the rear frame horns. My rear bumper IS my rear crossmember now.

so you didn't weld it to the existing rear crossmember, but removed that first, correct?
