rear bumper build

OK I have a front bumper build thread so I started on the back bumper today.
I will have a swing out tire mount that will hold 2 5gal gas cans when done and a 31-35 tire.
It might support a 38 but I'll never go there

Made some good progress.

Laying out the bumper :

The mounting brackets:

Mocked up to the jeep:

what are you cutting the steel with?
I have a rear bumper and I am itching to build the tire carrier.
Have you bought your latches yet? Where from? Where did you get your bearing for the swingout part?

thanks

I am using a combination of the cutoff saw 14in and a 4.5 grinder with a cutoff wheel in it. I also have a plasma cutter.

I got the hinge from A to Z fab. They are site sponsors here. Good guys to deal with.

I am using 2/6 stock and 2/2 and some 1x1 for the uprights.

I got the locking mechanism form small parts inc. Ill try to find the link and post it.

www.smallparts.com Do a search for DSC-323 That is what I ordered.

So far I think I would use 2x4 for the bumper like I used for the front bumper. don't really need 2x6 my 2cents of course

Did you just bolt to the rear cross member or have you tied that thing to the frame? The cross member itself is very weak so a frame tie in is highly recommended.

I am not done yet and I am going to try to redesign the mounting brackets yet again. I do plan on making frame tie ins when I get to that point. Still working that out.

I have to find a way around the spring mounts etc. Not to mention I am not sure how to get a nut in the back side of the fram or should I just drill all the way to the otherside?

Gastank is there and that worries me. I dont feel like dropping it or drilling into it.

OK i was tinking about this. When I paint the bumpers should i paint them body color or black? I am going to paint the jeep army green in the end.

I was thinking of painting the bumpers with the bedliner stuff then paint army green over that.

paint them flat black...and you might want to consider just welding it to the existing crossmember and then plating the sides in. if you kinda going for the cosmetic look you're in the clear, but if you are going to be pulling on things or you wheel it somewhat hard, that looks like it stick out a good bit and would hang up on things rather easily. just food for though.
