Is it really bad to mix clutch fluid?

My clutch fluid is low (to the point where I think it may be sucking air) and I think I read somewhere that you are not supposed to mix old/new clutch fluid or something. Is that legit? I need to top it off and I'm thinking mixed fluid is better than no fluid...

Top it off, it will not hurt anything.
