a really annoying problem

hello, got my first jeep back in november. haven't even driven it yet, was mechanically pretty messed up and an still in the process of rebuilding it. the PO was a real crack job mechanic. my current problem is the plate that goes between the transmission and engine. the bottom part of it is missing, so i am able to see the torque converter and starter wheel. is this plate one piece and had a part cut out, or was it 2 pieces. it is a 1990, 4.2 auto. thanks.

Are you talking about the plate that goes between the bell housing and the engine? I think its called the clutch housing spacer or something. Take a pic for us so we can help you out further.

You need it especially if you are going to go offroad. If you only drive it on the street you may never have a problem but if you get into dirt, rocks, branches, weeds, mud, etc... you will need one.

i dont think you'll have to drop it just take all bolts out and slide it back just enought to shimmy the plate in. Should just slide into the bottom half

I am pretty sure that that is 1 piece and has to go in before the trans is bolted in. Just did a tranny swap, I really should know but cant remember.

The auto has a 2 piece plate. There is a large aluminum plate behind the flex plate and it ends just below the 2 "ears" on the engine block. There is a smaller inspection plate that goes on the bottom portion of the bellhousing. The plate is ther so you can unbolt the torque converter from the flex plate. It's made of stamped tin. You don't need to pull the trans to put that plate on.....
