Putting down the Soft Top?

I feel retarded but how do you get the top off and down with the steel halfs and all? I was looking around the whole top and I couldn't see any snaps or anything along the windshield and the top. WTF I feel stupid...

Thanx,
John

John,

There are no snaps on the windshield, it's a channel. There are several snaps above the doors and one on each door below the mirror, but the rest are channels, with the exception of the interior ones.

1. Pull down on the tension bars in the back.
2. Unzip the side windows and remove them from the bottom and side channels.
3. Unzip the rear window and remove the back corner panels from their bottom channel.
4. Unsnap the snaps from the top rear rail and roll bars.
5. Remove the whole top from the rear forward.

The rails simply fold down and can be completely removed by popping out two plastic retaining pins in the rear and sliding them out.

Good luck,
Doug

Don't worry...you're not alone. My wife and I just bought a '94 and spent about 2 hours last weekend figuring out how to remove the soft top. I used to have an '80 CJ5 and it was a piece of cake but these are a little more complicated.

Just a note: TJ softtops are very different than YJs. They are much easier to put or down.

The reason why YJs are so difficult is because they are designed for the slant back roll bars from 91 and earlier. When they went to the shoulder harness in the rear they had to create a full cage, therefore the softtop frame doesn't fold down as easy because the rear cage is in the way.

Aw I never though of that, I always wondered why they designed it that way..
The 92 rollbars makes it difficult to remove it and the tension bars rips the rollbar covers all the time..

That's why I bought a California Top for my 95, no moving hardware. The part that covers the rear passenger area rests on the rear roll cage...I love it.

I've heard a lot of *****ing about the California tops. How is yours as far as fit, weather, and noise?

The fit is actually very good...I heard all the *****ing about them at first but I got a great deal...I was very surprised to find that I love the top....It fits very tight, it is very quiet...but it does leak through the velcro in a couple of spots...and I LOVE the hardware...basically a rail that attaches to the tub and a set of rails that fit around the doors....no moving parts at all very easy to put up and take down...i'll try to get a couple of pics up...
