putting the belt back on??

the other day i took off my alternator and while doing so i first thought that i had to losen the belt up so I losened the adjustment bolts on the power steering pump .... but i found out i didn't have to do that, just take the bolts out of the alternator and it comes right off... but now that i put it back together i have a whistling sound coming from it ... i'm wondering that if i have it to tight and could have some how worn the bearings in the idler pully?? because when i push the belt down and just spin it ... it makes a sound or is that natural ??? any thoughts about this??? can i take that little pully off?? or is the sound coming from somewhere else?

On my 95 4-banger the idler pulley sits in a rail and you just loosen that to take the belt off. Is it a whistling or sqealing noise? I had bad sqealing once cuz the idelr pulley was a bit loose so the belt kept turning then not turning as the it caught lost contact and then would catch again....

to loosen and tighten the belt, you have to loosen either the top bolt or bottom bolt on the alternator (i cant remember which). This loosens tension on the belt. To tighten the belt, you move the alternator to the left to tighten or the right to loosen. Retighen the bolts. The noise might be the belt is too loose.
