Project YJ

I'm looking at a '90 model 4 banger/manual/160k miles, has the usual rust and will need some sheet metal replacement. I can do this myself and repaint, mechanically I think everything is ok, I'm sure some surprises but I can handle all work. What do you think something like this is worth to buy, and value after it is repaired/repainted. Plan to do the basic mods, 2-4" lift etc. Thanks.

hmmm, I just recently bought a 90 YJ, 4.2L with 97K miles. For a 16yr old Jeep, it had normal rust I guess. Mechanically, it runs great. I paid $2,250 for it but guys on this board said that I could easily get anywhere from $4k to 5k elsewhere.

Johnny World: is the 4-5k after you repaired the rust or before? I'm talking rust holes in quarters front of rear wheels, similar in a couple other spots. This project would require sheet metal replacement and of course repaint - all of which I can do so no big deal. This jeep can be had for under 2k I'm sure and does have the hard top.

Oops, sorry, read your thread wrong. I haven't done any repairs on the rust. The 4-5k is what the guys on this board said they would have paid for the Jeep when I initially got it for 2K. So basically, they were saying I should jump on this deal.

since it's a 4 banger probably like 3500. there's a decent amount of miles on it, i wouldn't pay all that much for it, 35 tops. so for under 2 grand it's a decent find. i got my 92 4.0 ho for 2300 with decent rust, most of which i found after i tore apart, but the jeep had and still does have 129xxx for mileage. i got it through my brothers friends brother though so i got it somewhat cheaper.

Be sure and check the frame, if its got body rot theres a good chance of frame rot. My 89 was a good buy, looked great, had a few rust spots nothing I couldnt fix, but it had frame rot, so much so when I started working with it the steering box broke loose and both front frame arms are now MIA, they broke off when I was pulling the front bumper. I had a guy with a frame but the deal fell through now im parting it out. I hope I can get what I bought it for. so again I say check the frame as best you can.

I'm not crazy about the 4 cyl either, but I think this can be had for $1200-1500. Hard top is in good shape, interior not bad etc. Mechanically seems to be ok.

Realistic value? I'd say you're right on with $1200-1500. It's TBI and has rust. I6's will generally be $1500-2000 over a I4 of comparable year and shape.
