Prefer rebuild or new engine?

Am faced w/descion above. Both have same 3yr\36k mile waranty, but new is $1000 more. Is there any point in going new if rebuild is same? Really don't feel mechanically competant to try this on my own and besides I work 6 days week and am short on time. BTW, it's a inline 6, 4.2 liter, 1989
