I'm installing a new power steering pump and need help removing the pully. I'm looking for a set screw or something. Is it just keyed and pressed on? Do I only need a wheel/pully puller? It's on a '90 2.5L Wrangler.
Looked in my chiltons manual and can't find anything they just have pump removal. But fromt he pic's it looks like it just has a nut holding it on. Someone here might know.
It's not a nut, the pulley is pressed on. No key just a press fit. At least that's the way it is on my 88. If you see a nut on the front of the shaft then it will be a keyed unit, just remove the nut and the pulley should pop off, but I haven't seen that type of setup used on anything since the 60's. The pressed kind take a special tool. It has two halves that fit around the lip on the snout of the pulley, a sleeve that goes around them to hold them together, and a threaded piece that goes thru the middle and will push the shaft out of the pulley as you tighten down on it. Some parts stores will rent them, or loan them, any good machine shop (or good mom/pop type parts place) should be able to do it for you in about 10 minutes for a minimal charge. To install usually a new pump will come with a kit to install the pulley, consists of a bolt about 3 inches long threaded all the way, a nut and a washer. Should be some instructions also, if not let me know and I'll try and explain it.
When I did mine I removed the pully in the store while I was returning the core. Only took a couple of minutes. That made only one trip to autozone no have to check out tools and return them.
Great info, thanks guys. There is a bolt and nut in the package. I will go get the instructions now.
Thanks again,
DiverDuane
