Possible 305 drivetrain. questions.

So I could possibly get a TBI 305 with a blown head gasket from a friend for about $250. It would come with a transmission, torque converter, and transfer case. No wiring, no CPU, no anything else. I feel like I've taken a good enough look around to kinda know what I would get myself into.

-new wiring harness and cpu (right? CPU seperate?)
-new engine mounting stuff
-new exhaust
-new drive shafts with some sorta adapters?
-new radiator

The drive train runs now, just not all that good because of head gasket. Is it a good enough deal to just buy it and part it out for profit if needed?

That about sums it up, but don't forget about driveshafts, and will your rear end hold up? Novak is a good place to start, tons of info for mounting. Was looking the same route not long ago, but decided to go with a newer LS based combo...
Tons of great build threads on here along the same path as yours.

I say if you can score the whole power train minus a few parts, go for it, you'll save enough to go with painless for a harness and just hunt down the proper PCM / ECU for the engine and Trans. Just rebuild and make it run.

It depends what year and which version.
Some were decent, some were slugs.

What happens in my Jeep, stays in my Jeep

Fair points on both. I've talked about this with a few buds around here, and I think I'll stick with the newly rebuilt 2.5L. It's strong enough and will last for a long time. Whilst a V8 is tempting, I don't NEEEEEED it like I need lockers/winch. Heck, I want cloaks and a SOA before I even think about a new engine.

Thanks for the advice guys!
