Poor mans paint job. my $60 shot at it. Tons of pics

Hey everyone, ive been contemplating painting my heep for a while now and about two weeks ago i heard of "The poor mans paint job" and after weighing the pro's and cons i decided to pull the trigger. i figured i couldnt make it worse, so went out and bought the supplies and got to work.
Before pic of the jeep

The supplies (even got a can of spraypaint for touchups)

I wanted to get most of the dents out, i didnt want a show car by any means cause i got my jeep to run around in the woods but did want it to look alright. and there were a ton of bad spots

Coat of Primer to start it off

First of many coats
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...013_175323.jpg
ended up putting on about 8 coats, progressively sanding from 400/600/800/1000 grit to improve the finish. putting the trim back on and decided to paint some parts shiny black to POP against the blue
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...017_084114.jpg
even repainted the bumper and polished up the grill a little bit

The final product, the paint turned out to be a little lighter than i invisioned but i can say this, ITS BLUE!!

So there you have it, just thought i would give yall an update and see how you like it. now i have to decide if i want to keep the rear flares off or put them on. kinda like the look of them off but we will see.

Smurfy!

Looks like you did a pretty good job, congratulations

JonBrown 10-17-2011 08:25 PM

haha thanks, yea the guys at the local jeep club said my new name is papa smurf... oh well, new call sign for me haha

LilyBayXJ 10-17-2011 08:25 PM

Damn! Nice improvement, I like it. I used a similar process for repainting my CJ last spring.

AaronJ 10-17-2011 08:41 PM

Not bad. (pretty damn good if you consider the price). I could see me doing something like that with a desert tan or some such color that didn't need to be glossy.

And yeah, you need a sticker of a smurf somewhere on that thing.

LOL that might be coming in the future now, and i thought of painting it OD green or some thing everyone would notice like john deere yellow/green or something, but those are always done and i wanted something different. <-- apparently that means smurf blue?
Thanks for all the compliments guys! so how do yall feel about the rear flares, keep em or no?

Anticanman 10-17-2011 08:45 PM

Pretty close to FNH blue. I like it!

Well while youve got them off, I would go down and get some of the smittybily rear tj tube flares and gloss black 'em before you install!

DCWarrior65 10-17-2011 08:48 PM

Now if only you had a red hard or soft top it really would look like Papa Smurf. Just picture it. That would be awesome.

Seriously though, looks good to me!

This is the color I've always wanted to paint my Jeep. My favorite color is Grabber Blue and I feel like this is a close match.

Dallas333 10-17-2011 09:05 PM

What size compressor did you use? Looks good for $60!

JonBrown 10-17-2011 09:16 PM

I have an 80 gal behind the shop, and i used an el cheapo spray gun from Walmart that I've had for a few years. This is my first time trying any body work or painting a car so i am proud of how it looks, i will look at my receipts and get a list of all i bought and try and put up a little price list in a day or so. and as far as the color, i wanted to get New Holland blue (tractor paint) but i couldn't find it anywhere so the rusto Glossy sail Blue is what i ended up with.

That is a great idea! however i might have to wait till the beginning of the year (hint the cheapo paint job) no $$ right now.

Not bad, not bad at all..... This is perfect for the DIYer that wants a matte-ish finish. Great job!

The FNH blue is available from a company called Ellis. Their implement paint is the only thing that I use on my YJ. Coincidentally, my smitty tj flares got the same paint, as did my hardtop, side armor and bumpers. The metalcloak fenders I ordered will get the same treatment but mine is all in black, not FNH blue. It's a VERY durable paint, I should know because my tractors and implements that get left in the sun or drug in the dirt are painted with the same respective colors from Ellis.

The flares are only about $100 IIRC. Great investment!

JonBrown 10-17-2011 09:39 PM

where can you get the fenders for 100? are you talking about these flares http://www.quadratec.com/products/12057_250X_PG.htm and why not get the yj ones(havent done research into fender flares much) and thats the basis i have for running the type of paint i'm using. If tractors use it then i think it should do alright for me.
