plastic welding gas tank?

Well I am having trouble with a crack in my 20 gallon plastic tank. JB weld only holds for a few months before it flakes off.

I was wondering if this, http://www.harborfreight.com/plastic...ron-67102.html , might work to "weld" the plastic together?

Otherwise my only option is to get a new tank, which is about 300$...

Maybe, but suggest you get someone that knows plastics and the appropriate stuff to use. From my experience in another sport I know there are a number of guys that do repairs on kayaks and canoes of various plastics. There is a difference between cross linked polyethelene and ABS, HDPE and PVC, and different materials and methods are used for each. The first step might be to find out what specific plastic is used for our tanks. here is a good link with a lot of resources for plastic repair.

I've personally never had any luck with the plastic welder on anything. I'd try to find somebody parting out or going to a fuel cell. We tend to have a ton of people ripping them apart in this area because of unrepairable rust...so gas tanks are plentiful.

Don't waste your time and money, no repair will hold. Quadratec has tanks for $169, that is your best bet.

Many plastics don't weld well. Others (PVC) can only be welded with RF heating (sort of like microwave). I believe that the tank is polyethylene which is chemically stable but very difficult to repair.

Thanks all, it looks like Ill be looking for a used gas tank for sale. I would go for the cheaper 15 gallon tanks but those have the circular fuel sending unit and my 20 gallon has a square one.

I had this same issue with my poly tank. First step was a fuel tank patch kit from napa. No luck. Next step was jb weld.. Twice and still no luck. Last step was using a carbon fiber bondo. That lasted a few months but then failed again. My crack was where the bottom portion was bonded to the top right smack dab in the middle so eventually I gave up and bought a new one. 300 bucks from 4wp.

10-4 on the never had any luck with the plastic welder. I tried all kinds of things to fix a tank many years ago...new tank solved it.
