plastic droped in transfer case

I was changing fluid in my transfer case today (np231), all was going way too easy! As I was pushing the last few pumps of fluid in through a hand pump, the small plastic fill nosel shot off and into the case (note to self... never use that thing again!!!) . I have tried to finger sweep for it and can not find it. Is it ok if i leave it in there for a short time? Im thinking that the gears will chew it up within a few miles. Then I could just drain fluid and replace. Or do I need to split the case and pull it out?

Thanks for any help

You may be able to reach it by pulling the shaft housing off, "the cone", instead of having to split the entire case.

If you let the gears chew it up then more than likely it will plug the filter for the oil pump and could trash your t case.

Need to get it out. If it gets chewed up and clogs the pump pick up that little piece of plastic can cost you some big bucks to replace or rebuild the case.

there's no pump in the transfer case only the engine the gears lay in fluid run it for a week and change the fluid but i don't think the pieceof plastic will hurt anything

Sadly, I did the exact same thing about a year ago.

I changed the fluid again in about a month.

Other than that, I try not to think about it and have been very successful until you reminded me.

Maybe pull the drain plug and it will float out with the fluid. Fill and drain until it comes out.

There has to be a pump in there to circulate the fluid.......

OP, try draining it and see if you can feel it as the fluid (hopefully) pushes it towards the drain plug. If not, I wouldn't run it like that myself.
Sounds like a good time to install a SYE if it doesnt come out!
