overheat options

Hi all, took my 91 YJ for an extended run today. Hovered on 240 degrees. Had to stop a couple times and cool it off. My fan clutch allows me to spin the fan freely even though the thing was hot enough to fry eggs. It does have a new radiator, stock of course. Couple of questions, is it probably just the clutch, or should I look into another/better radiator and electric fan. Do away with the clutch? I'm sure this is a common problem, what has been the fool proof combo to take care of it. TIA

Good possibility on the fan clutch. I'd just go with an electric fan so much nicer. Did it to mine and it always stays cool.

I just replaced my catalytic converter as it was causing overheating issues on the freeway (clogged). Now no issues.

If your fan is spinning freely then I wouldn't switch to an electric one (since thats not a problem). Have you checked your anti-freeze? How old is it? Perhaps your radiator is clogged? Check your hoses... Check them for wear and spots where they collapsed.

You say the radiator is new so you must have drained the fluid.
Was it overheating before the radiator change?

The reason I say is that when I drained mine, it was pretty difficult to get all the air out of the system and it would overheat when idled for a long time. Finally was able to completely bleed the system and it's been great since.

I had the same problem with my '91 YJ (I4), thinking it was over-heating. After flusing the system, installing a 180 degree themostat, and new fan clutch, a mechanic suggested testing the system with an infared heat gun to see where the problem was coming from....i.e clogged radiator. What we found was even though the gauge was reading 240+, the top radiator hose temp was only at about 195-205, and the back side of the block was around 200 as well. The sending unit sets only about 3" from the exhaust header(which is about 475 degrees at highway speeds) and was giving false readings to the factory gauge. We installed a mechanical gauge in the block on the passenger side, and it shows sometimes a 30 degree difference from the factory unit. Hope this helps.
