Opinions Please, Black or Chrome Wheels

I have been headed toward all trim pieces black while keeping the original body color (at least for now). I am at a cross roads on the wheels, I think I would like to paint them black but I understand that chrome wheels can be difficult to paint and make them last. The chrome is starting to rust in a few places also.

What's your opinion???

If anyone has similar wheels they have painted from chrome to black please share pics.

You can paint chrome as long as you sand ALL of the shine off of it. It is eaiser to get a new set of rims already powder coated.

Just a thought....but perhaps somebody has a set of black wheels that they'd be willing to trade you.

I do like that style of wheel - it looks nice on your rig.

Although I'm not big on chrome, IMO it's better than black on some rigs. I went from black steelies to polished alloys on my white YJ and think it looks MUCH better than it did with black wheels

I think they look nice on your rig. I probably would go chrome or aluminum instead of black next time. They do rust easy though, I had a set of wheels like that on a car I had and every spring they would be all rusty. I would take them off and clean them with coca cola and scrub with a wad of tin foil. Sounds crazy I know but it works, something about the coke easting the rust and the tin foil is harder then the rust but softer then the chrome. Then just wax them good after. I probably wouldnt paint them though youd really have to sand them good or have them sandblasted, just find someone with black wheels that wants to trade maybe.

I have the same rims as you do only with a black center section. I just got a new spare and painted the entire rim black and was going to paint my other rims to match. I placed the all black one over my other one and it did not look right for my tastes. All your attention went to the body of the Jeep and not the tires. If my chrome gets bad I'll prob just end up doing rattle can chrome or silver on the outside and leave the center black. Here's what they look like with a black center.

I'll be honest, if you go with ALL black hardware, such as the hinges and the like all being black, stick with chrome. Once you get too much black on it, it'll clash the original color. If you stick with a mild amount of black hardware, you can pull off the black wheels in style. My opinion really...

I really like the way those rims look on her now though, looks great if you ask me.

Snow dog, I like those wheels on your jeep in fact when I bought my wheels I asked my parts guy if he could get me those but he said they no longer make them. I just ended up getting black D window steelies and got some 15" stainless trim rings off a trunk at the junkyard for a similar look. It ok but I'd still rather have some like yours.

I like metal rims. Chrome isn't my favorite, but I like it a lot better than black. My YJ is red too, and it currently has black steelies. In fact, your Jeep looks a lot like mine. I am going to change the wheels to alloy color with Dupli-Color wheel paint. Too much black looks cheap, but that's just my opinion.

I have a black Jeep so I wanted something to off set the dark color of the body and trim. I
painted the Hard Top Spice from Black and bought some American Racing **Gambler**
style Aluminum wheels to lighten it up.

Looking at the pictures of your rig I think that black rims would look really good. Gotta love that black and red combo!
