Operating temperature of chevy 350 conversion
Hello all, I am the proud owner of a 1989 yj that was converted to a chevy 350 small block by the previous owner. On my last wheeling trip the temp guage climbed from the "normal operating temp" of 180 to around 200 to 205. I since have replaced the thermostat, had the radiator flushed, replaced the water pump, checked head compression and replaced the radiator cap. The temp now stays steady at around 200 degrees. I originally bought the jeep in oct in a cold climate and now the weather is warming up could this have something to do with the temp fluctuation? Am I just worrying about nothing or could there be something that I am missing? Thanks in advance for replies.
Dave

if it has a 195 t/stat, it would sit at around 200-205 when upto temp on a trail.
sounds fine to me martin

What kind of a radiator are you running? Might want to look into a large aluminum radiator. Money well spent. x2 on Martin's thought. 200 isn't all that hot. I wouldn't sweat it but if you want to lower it what I have listed above is your best bet.
Just a simple mans thinking. Todd

I am running an aluminum race radiator with seperate tranny cooler and the thermostat is a 185. If you all think 200 isn't hot I'll concentrate on some other upgrades it needs instead. Thanks for the info. Dave

on really hot days on the trail mine has got to 210. swap a fan in with a full shroud for better cooling if you like but it sounds fine.
