Welcome to the forum. It sounds like linkage is not right.

Red button sounds like a Posi-lok for the front axle and looks like its a 4"lift with 33's.

Sounds like maybe the linkage isn't working properly

It's a posi lok cable. Slowly roll in 4hi and push in the red button while pulling the entire black handle. You should feel the splines line up and the cable with pull all of the way out. About three inches maybe.

Hi mmfd - you should really start a new thread for your prob. Its very likely one of the battery cables or (possible) the ignition switch. I'm betting the positive battery cable is toast under the insulation. Hope that helps, and welcome to one of the best jeep sites anywhere!

Search first, then start a new thread lol. Searching goes a long way most of the time.

Nah Its not a vac problem, your vacuum lines are bypassed for your 4x4 when you install the posi lock. Your red button looking thing is posi lock as others have said. Push the red button in and pull on it, it should come out approximately 4 inch. Then move your 4x4 stick back into 4x4. You'll probably need to roll a few feet and it should lock in. Hope it works! Welcome to forum!

He said that the transfer case shifter won't stay in 4x4 mode, that would be a linkage issue, not a front axle problem. Try pulling back and forth on the shifter with everything shut off. If it wasn't used much by the previous owner, the linkage may just be binding from lack of use.

PB Blast the linkage and let it soak for a good while. Then try shifting it forward. If that doesnt work you can always use a pry bar on the linkage for more leverage. I've done that before and it slid right back into 2H. Also, change the transfer case fluid, you might be running low or have muddy water in there causing binding. Welcome to the Jeep World!
