offroad Jeep TJ problem

Well with some friends we went wheeling in desert (soft sand) and had some TJ issues.

1. My friends TJ brakes were not working properly when his jeep is in reverse or
at 4Lc gear.
2. secondly it was getting hot and coming back to normal later after a while.

conclusion came that both related to the gear box as jeep looses rpm's while in reverse..

any comment? welcome.
