That's the last of the interior of case for now. I don't think I will have to cut the shaft down for the jb sye kit the less than 9 1/2 inch measurement should do it but of course I will be double checking all of this.

Here are two pictures of the transfer case 1998, np231 (23 spline), the NV3550 (2001), and the 1997 dakota bell housing, all put together temporarily. The progress is steady, looking to order the jb conv. sye. in one week, waiting for the Advance Adapters slave cyl. kit and NV3550 pilot in the mail, should arrive soon, will post full pictures of kit when I get it. Still thinking about moving the engine forward 2 inches as a possibility, also I will need a shifter handle for the transmission.

Of course they come off, and they go back on easily too. Look at the photos in this thread regarding removing the shift lever from the shift shaft. You push it back on, and the little nipple in the spring clip snicks into the groove on the shift shaft stub. You can likely come up with a new shifter on ebay, local forums, or even advertise on this forum in the "want to buy" section.

Good thing I didn't listen to the guy who owned the jeep salvage yard in Sunland Valley, Ca. He wanted to sell me the whole shifter assembly for a pretty healthy price. He said you can't take them off, you have to buy the whole shifter assembly.. Nice guy huh? I knew something didn't sound right about that. So I politely thanked him for his time and walked away.

For whatever reason, many people believe they cannot be separated...hopefully I am dispelling that piece of misinformation. The shifter for Cherokees is way more commonly found in junkyards, but the bend/length of it is a lot different and can be a but awkward in a YJ. If you can heat and rebend, or weld a different shaft on it that could be the way to go. Otherwise keep a lookout for one on ebay.

And also Summit makes extensions if you end up with a Cherokee shifter and need to modify it.

Ummmmmm, remembering now that you have an NV3550..........

I am not certain if the stub is set up the same in the 3550 as in the AX15, and I've been sending you links for the AX15. If you need me to measure the square on my AX15 stub, and measure how far from the end the indentations are for the spring clip nipples, I can do that.

I hope I haven't been misleading you on this. Looking at your photos the visible difference I can see is you have grooves cut around your shifter stub the way the transfer case shifter is, while I have small holes set into mine as seen in the photos on one of the links I sent regarding separating the shifter.

There is another thread also in the FAQ by Northjeep who swapped in an NV3550 in place of his BA 10/5. In his photos, the shifter stub on his 3550 looks different from yours. Perhaps if you PM him he can shed some light on the shifter issue.

Thanks opihi59, the info you are providing is greatly helping my progress. I am going through all the info. you are giving. I read Northjeeps swap to, and am going to drop in on his thread pretty soon and say hello. It is an excellent thread.
My A.A. parts came in, so here are some pictures of what you get with this kit. Starting with the box, and papers.

And the pilot. The pilot just doesn't drop in, it just needs a little oil and tapping for it do seat.

On your slave cylinder, does it have a fixture that allows it to be bled? Really should have a plug or something to go in the bleeder bore which will be oriented "upwards" when installed. I read the instructions you photo'd, it implies that there is no bleeder nipple, you have to "bench bleed" it before installation, then add the hose, and bleed that as well........ and it certainly sounds as if there are plenty of opportunities for that process to not go completely smooth.
Additionally, don't cut off the white plastic strips on the action rod--they are designed to be installed intact, and seated in the receptacle of the clutch fork. When you depress the clutch for the first time, the straps are designed to break. The tabs don't fall away, they just stay there. Of course, if you remove the straps, you can launch the piston and you generally need a new slave cyl at that point. Good that the instructions covered that in some detail. Others on the forum have had adventures with that strap.
