NP231 vs 231HD

Have a quick question for the experienced jeepers here.. I have an 88 YJ automatic with a NP 231 t case that's starting to make some noise. I found a tcase from a friend of a friend he "said" came out of a XJ.. I went today and bought it for 50 bucks. The tag was all covered in grim and dirt I scratch the surface enough with my finger nail to see it said 231 on it. Upon closer inspection at home it say 231HD on it. I was wondering if this is still a direct swap and if it was a better/worse tcase that what I have? Any help would be appreciated!

as long as the input gear is going to match up to your transmission you'll be way ahead with the HD

Check to see if the input gear, vacuum port connection for your CAD and speedometer connection is correct for what you need.

If it came from something besides a YJ - you might have to deal with other items.

additional info.. I cleaned tag alittle better and it actually says 231D-HD.. if that makes a difference?
Thank you all for the replies!.. I did see the CAD sensor is different. This one looks like its an electrical connections.. someone told me I could just remove my sensor and it should screw right in to replace it. I didn't even look about the speedometer... I will make sure to do that tomorrow.

My quick research says that NP231DHD is wide chain (that's good) but still just a 3 gear planetary (same as YJ NP231) and a 23 spline short input gear. The 6 pinion planetary gears come from np241 or Advanced Adapters. (AA)

The wide chain sprockets are probably worth the $50 so not a bad deal still. You'll end up with two complete cases so you can sell one off in working condition to pay for more parts.
