Not your average exhaust question
I love my exhaust, the way it sounds, the performance gain from it being matched to my other components, the fact that I completely did it my self and may or may not have included a certain feline component while welding it all up.
![]() But it's not good for "the family" I work night shift, I usually get off at 6:00AM but sometimes am off as early as 3:00AM. I park my Jeep in my driveway which is unfortunately about 2.7mm away from my little 3/yo boys bedroom window, and it wakes him up every time I come home. Granted, it's not that big of a deal when I get home at 6:30 in the morning because he has to leave for "school" at 7:30 with his mom when she goes to work. But when I come creeping into the driveway at 3:30 in the early hours of the morning and then see his light turn on I just know what is waiting for me when I open the door... a little boy who is so happy to see his daddy after working a 13 hour shift that there is no way he is going back to bed, which also means that I have to stay awake all damned morning until the two of them leave 4 hours later which is a real bummer when you're looking forward to getting in bed those 4 hours earlier. So needless to say, I need to do something about it. I've always had one type of exhaust on my vehicles (with one exception) throughout the years - a 2" exhaust running straight from the manifold/headers to a single cheap-o turbo muffler. So I have no idea what to expect from other types of exhaust, what I should be considering, what is quiet, what is not, and so on and so forth. So I'm asking you guys to give me some input. I've already spent a good deal looking at past posts and threads, one seemed promising about Borla mufflers, but the thread shortly derailed into this or that and then became about catalytic converters and yadda yadda blah blah blah. I'm up for anything really. I'll be doing the work myself, I have the welder(s), tubing, tube bender, various brackets, etc (I work in the auto industry) so there is really no exhaust design that I can't do (so long as it is plausible). I am entertaining the idea of a duel parallel exhaust, split right after the manifold flange, that leads into two mufflers - thinking that might make for one quiet exhaust without sacrificing a lamb to the performance dieties, but I just don't know. Come on crowd, give me your input, and forgive my long-winded post, I get like this when running on no sleep and lots of coffee.

I like the Borla. The best reason I have for liking it is I put the manifold and exhaust on in 1992. It has been a daily driver since about 95 with no exhaust issues.

Well, the cheapest way out of it. Buy the kid some ear muffs.. hehe. Other than that. i mean the factory exaust is loud enough to hear in these new POS houses with paper thin walls. Good luck with that.

I recently put the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler on mine (with a Magnaflow cat) and I'll be switching it for a stock muffler soon- it's too loud for me.

If you don't want to keep that certain feline component, I suggest making a resonated midpipe. I think you can buy resonators on performance car websites. Weld one or even two resonators where that meow meow used to be, and your exhaust will give you the same performance as before, but will be hush-hush.
You might have to experiment with different placement and packing to eliminate the frequencies you want to silence though... |

I have a universal borla on my 89 yj with a 4.2L AMC engine. it has 2" piping and a stock manifold. Mine also has a 2.5" x 12" rolled exhaust tip, which mellowed out the sound quite nicely. You cannot go wrong with borla performance even if it is over one hundred dollars. My whole system was only about $75 to install including the tip at the local muffler shop. I ordered my borla from Summit. My muffler is just after the transfer case and my tip comes out between the gas tank and passenger side rear shackle. and I do not have a cat.
