No oil on top end.

I took the valve cover off to locate number one on top dead center and found no oil on top end. Pulled the plugs and cranked the engine and no oil. When cranking with battery it shows 20 lbs oil pressure on the gauge. Any ideas or is there a solution ?

The oil in your top end does not spray as you may think. Is it wet with oil? If so I am sure that you are ok.

Also is it all gunked up? If so you just may be plugged/

20 psi seems a little low, my 4.2 usually had around 40 psi at idle, like 50 above 1500

The OP said he removed the plugs and while cranking it was 20psi, not 20 psi at idle.

Put the plugs in and fire it up (unless you can't which is why you're looking for TDC?) the engine can run with the valve cover off and you should be able to see oil come up through the push rods and on top of the rockers, the oil doesn't 'spray' it should just seep out and keep everything coated in oil. starts to splash around at higher rpm though

If there truly wasn't oil in the top end, you would know it immediately.

There is truly no oil. There is no oil in the rocker arms and when I turned it over with the plugs out no oil came out of the push rods. When you wipe the head with a paper towel it is smudgy dirty but no wet oil at all. I took a push rod out thinking they might be plugged but they werrn't plugged. When the engine was running it had about 40 psi. I am going to drain the engine and fill it with diesel fuel and see if that opens anything up. When I turned it over with the plugs out I was thinking I should see oil come up through the push rods. When it was running it didn't make any loud noises.

I am confused here. 40psi, normal, no noise when running, normal????????

The jeep motors are not designed for high flow oil to the top end. My valve cover on the 4.2 had hardly any at all on it.

Does the top end get lubricated from te oil that comes up through the push rods? There is no oil on the top end. When cranking with plugs out there is no oil coming out of the pushrods and the rockers, springs and head are totaly dry. I am going to fill the engine with diesel fuel and try spinning it that way to see if anything comes out of the pushrods. Then I will pull the oil filter and put a priming pump in the pasage that goes to the engine to see if I can get any oil on top. Since it does not have a rocker arm assembly I am assuming that the top end gets oil from the push rods.

Put a quart of Mystery Marvel in your crankcase and run it. If you aren't getting a lot of tapping due to no top end lubrication (then again my jeep sounds like a diesel) then that's kind of weird. Does your jeep smoke at all? I'm sure the valve seals would be toast after a while.

If you pull the lifters and then reuse them make sure you put them back in the same hole.
