No Cool Name YJ Build

Hello Everybody!

I've been lurking this forum for a few years now, but just recently became a supporting member. This forum has helped me out so much, and I've learned so much from here. My 1st Jeep was a WJ, and boy did I love that thing! but.... the more I Wheeled the more I realized that I needed to get a wrangler. With the WJ being a coil over, I did get a case of DW. That really sucked, and after that experience I said no more! lol That lead me to a YJ!

This Was the Day I bought my Jeep, bought it off the original owner with 190K, 4.0 AX15 231. It was his DD until 01, since then it would sit in his garage and he would drive it a few times a year.

1st thing I did was change all fluids, filters, plugs, cap and valve cover gasket.

I wanted to Build a very reliable rig with big tires. I was getting married that summer so I didn't have a lot of funds, which lead me to the U pull it yard in search of a 8.8 with 4:10's and LSD.

With my Little one loving the jeep and wanting to ride in it all the time, I decided to get a family bar. Of course it was red, so I stripped it down and painted it black. found a used Smittybuilt on CL for $20, done.

It was Christmas in July when my Cloaks showed up! I ordered them in bare metal, primed them, did my test fitting and drilling, then took everything off, and finished painting them in a semi gloss black.

This was a ton of work, and took a few weekends from start to finish.

Well worth it though! the quality of Metalcloak is top notch!

One day I went out to the jeep and it would not start? after giving it a few it started.... long story short this went on for a few weeks, so I ordered a new fuel pump thinking the pump was bad, left town for work, and while I was out of town I found a thread here on the forum call...... "ECU brain surgery" lol

Came home from my work trip, did the surgery. I couldn't let that new Walbro255 just go to waste, so I installed that as well.
Jeep fired right up and ran great.... for a few days. Then it would not start at all.

Reading posts from a few of what I would call the YJ forum electric guru's (Que/Sport)
I learned to use a multi meter, and started troubleshooting my fuel electrical system. Turned out there was a cut in the ground wire near the backseat.

BTW, I did the walbro because 1) always upgrade.....
2) LSx swap may be coming next year

So for now, with winter setting in, the jeep is parked for the winter. Over the winter I plan on Rebuilding an extra 231 with a SYE. I have another D30 that I'm going to rebuild, and beef the hell out of it. I plan on doing the WJ knuckle swap, so I can get the duel piston brakes, and RuffStuff GM 1 ton crossover kit. Also going to put a lunchbox in it and if funds are there maybe some chromoly shafts....
I guess we'll see!

Nice rig. The color is awesome and looks great with the cloaks. I do have to ask about the fuel pump. How easy was it to install with the original sending unit?

Thanks guys! I get a lot compliments on the color, I have yet to see another one the same color.

As for the fuel pump, it was pretty straight forward, but there was 2 mods required

1) the bottom of the factory housing is a full diameter with a hole going thru it for the screen. I needed to cut it so it resemble a "C" for it to accommodate the Walbro screen.

2) the factory pump was hard wired to the top of assembly. The Walbro had a male style plug, so I needed to order a female plug from walbro. (wish they would have stated that on there website ) I then soldered the wires to the top of the assembly, so its a true plug and play now.

I wish I had a pic, so much easier that way.

Nice looking jeep. Congrats.

This quote about death wobble confused me, though...DW is not a coil spring issue, its a solid axle thing and YJs are just as susceptible to it. It comes from loose/worn steering components and/or mounting points.

Thanks Dude

As far as death wobble, I agree that it is a solid axle thing and not just a coil over thing. Just seems that it doesn't affect the YJ platform (leafs) as much.
When my TJ and XJ buddy's get DW, most of the time its there TB, either worn out bushings or the egged out hole frame side.

Track bars, who needs those things anyway! lol
