Newbie: Can't figure out how to switch top halves of doors!
Hello there. I am New (last summer) to the Jeep scene. I bought a White '93 YJ Jeep with a soft top. I knew I wanted a hard top, so I bought one, never dreaming that the doors wouldn't fit. The soft top door jam has squared off door jams (top, rear corner) whereas ya'll know the hard top has a rounded off feature in that same corner. So, in the short term I bought a used, (and not so nice) set of hard doors to fit. Then I found a pair of (red) half doors where the top half a have a sliding window thinking I could swap the top half (soft top) door for the slider and have the nice matching doors with the sliders...... SO, how in the hell do these tops latch on, I have had then in my living room trying to figure it out? When all is said and done, I want the original doors, with the slider tops, back on the jeep and get rid of the 4 extra doors and the soft top! I live just west of Detroit if someone knows anyone in the neighborhood! Sorry I sound like such a dork, I really did try to get them off! Thanks for your help in advance!

can't help you with the sliders...but why not have the full door painted to match??? Don't those fit? I would rather have the hard doors with real windows then the sliders.YMMV.

The sliders just kinda sit on there and slide into the gap like the soft top ones do.
I say keep the Soft Top around though. You never know if you're ever going to need. It's nice to keep around for whatever reason. |

Hey what city are you in ? But you should be able to pull the old half top out and the slider window top should fit in the same holes.

There should be some inserts that fit into the lower half door and some bolts that hold it to the door if your are the same as the ones I had.

You might have bought TJ upper sliders and somebody made it to fit a YJ. so it might have been forced into the inserts, so pull hard!

Theses doors that are on it have many issues. I suppose painting the red doors with the sliders would be an option though.

My problem is that I don't know how the soft ones are on either. Based on what people ar saying.... am I to understand that they are just sitting on top with some kind of bar going down through the holes? So, just lift really hard and they'll come out? It looks like there are some sort of hooking mechanism. I guess I'll try pulling them up and off.

My hard sliders just slip in the inserts holes in the doors. No latch.

You didn't say if you've done it and nobody has mentioned it yet. You do have to unhook the fabric from the retention rails on the outside of the door first. Just start at the bottom on one side and pull out. There's a plastic piece that fits into the rail. Then just grab both sides of the window and pull straight up.
Just remembered. In case you are one of the lucky ones that have one that works there is a snap on the lower front edge of the fabric that also needs to be unhooked. Last edited by Alacran; 01-31-2010 at 07:19 AM.. Reason: additional information |

Are the sliders a hard fiberglass piece? Or are the soft fabric with a slider in them?
That should help determine how to pull them off. The full fiberglass pieces sit on top of the 1/2 door and then use bolts that go down into the door and then screw into a nutsert type deal that goes in (the Bestop ones are a pain in the butt! I keep telling myself I'm going to find another way to do it, but haven't yet). Anyways - You would see a bolt end that would be sticking out at the front (front as in relation to where it sits near the windshield). The other 2 would be near the "arm rest" area. If it's the soft top material with a slider inside of that... I believe they attach the same as the regular soft top. The material slides under the soft top retention bar on the 1/2 door. To pull it off, you just need to pull the material away from the very bottom of the window on the outside. Typically I start mine by pushing it out from the inside, isntead of trying to pull it off from the outside. Once you have it started, then you just keep pulling along the channel until it's off. After that, swing the door open and pull up on the upper piece. Knowing what we're dealing with for sure will let us be able to give you exact details... And pictures would be worth 1000 words. ![]()
