Hi, I purchased my first jeep wrangler as a project. 1992 Jeep 4.0L 1700000 miles. A little rust in the floor board driver side (repaired) a little rust driver side near fender flare (repaired). I want to start repairing or inspecting engine and drivetrain and wanted to know if you anyone had some advise where to start and what to look for. Common problems and such???I have already tuned it up with new plugs, wire, cap and rotor. New Brakes and calipers(front) and basic cleaning. I know the manifold is cracked and needs replaced but from what i read that is pretty normal. From what I can tell little or no leaking. Thank you for your advise

as long as there is nothing seriously wrong with it right now, i would just use it till something breaks, the 4.0 is an excellent motor to start with, anything you do to it isnt really going to gain you lots of power for little money.
when you really want to make it scream, look into a stroker kit for the motor, but i doubt if i would bother myself.
the only real weak issue on the 4.0 is the rear main oil seal, and if you do that, pull the tranny, do the clutch/torque converter, and check the flywheel.

How about starting with a compression test to see how that baby is doin? Check all the running gear for unusual noises lift the tires off the ground and see what you can hear, feel, see by moving them around and pulling on them to check the bearings, look at all the suspension to make sure it is sound. Generally get on a dolly and slide on under there and just start staring at everything. Take some wrenches and generally start tightening all just to make sure nothing is loose. How is the pan area, lot of oil or is it dry? Check the rear frame member for rust and/or corrosion. Change your fuel filter.
