Hey all,
Just tried to install my new MTS fuel pump and it is significantly smaller than the original Bosch that I had in there (see photo attached). The connections aren't a direct fit either. The model number is EFPK-3201C. I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this and whether it's workable or if it's just the wrong part. I called the company direct to make my order to avoid this exact scenario but here I am without a working vehicle...any help is appreciated :cheers2:
You need MeanMax (forum member) to clarify further but I believe there were two different fuel pumps 1991-1995. There was a domestic model and an export model. When sales were higher than expected, they sold export
models which had different tanks and pumps (designed to be tougher for inferior fuels sold in other countries). Looks like you have the export model and import tank, which means the MTS pump won't fit in your tank at all. It requires a special sending unit to fit into also.
If I remember correctly, the OEM pump for domestic was Walbro, and the export was manufactured by Bosch.
Hey thanks for the info. That would definitely explain why the MTS website says it fits the model but it clearly doesn't. There must be a replacement version of the Bosch "export version" pump that I can exchange this one for. Sounds like a call to MTS is in order. Mean Max feel free to chime in but I'll also send you a PM.

Update!!!
Another good customer service experience at MTS. Mike explained to me that the Bosch was the more heavy duty of the two pumps in the YJ however the metal filings in the sock and the loud whine was indicative of a gear driven pump going south. Apparently theirs are turbine driven and are smoother and last longer at only 46 bucks! I took the opportunity to order a sending unit to tank gasket (6.99) which they apparently make in house and are better than dealership. All in all a very pleasant experience and they will send along the new one and refund the old one when I ship it back.

As I understand it there is one pump to replace the walbro adn one to replace the bosch. I will return the walbro type replacement and get a bosch replacement in exchange.
Thanks for the pic :2thumbsup: Is that an OEM replacement sending unit assembly or is that one designed to fit the MTS pump? I ask because the feed tube looks a lot longer to compensate for the shorter pump unit. I am trying to use the original equipment besides the pump itself.
Thanks again!
I'm not 100% sure but that may be an MTS replacement assembly. I dropped it and broke the inlet tube of the new smaller pump, and got a replacement pump from autozone. It fit right in there. I couldnt find anything that matched the big bosch pump assembly as i would rather have had original equipment
Bosch actually makes a pump to fit in the small spot such as in the MTS assembly. It's #69544. I've never been able to find the larger OEM export model.

To update on my quest for a darn fuel pump...I got a call from MTS today telling me that the second pump they're sending me also is not going to fit the "export" assembly designed for the Bosch fuel pump. I am able to find the original bosch unit on amazon and summit.com but it is $170 for pump only. For that price I can just buy a full MTS replacement assembly with pump, sending unit, gaskets, screen etc. Mike at MTS did offer to look into a reputable replacement for the Bosch pump because the customer service there is just that good but I have a feeling I will be buying the full MTS setup by the end of the week. At least then I will have a "domestic" style sending unit and replacement pumps will be much cheaper and easier to find. anyway, that's where I'm at. Can't believe no one made a replacement for the Bosch pump...
The factory export tank is taller. The full sending unit from MTS will be too short inside your tank. You will have to figure out some way to lengthen the assembly to get it to the bottom of the tank unless you buy the new tank too. That's why all the export crap really sucks. If you have the export setup, it's near impossible to replace any of it without replacing every single part in the assembly at the same time (tank, pump, sending unit, and in some cases the skid plate).
It's not that. It's the fact of it being longer combined with the sending unit assemblies being a lot different with different ways of being setup. The domestic style has a little shelf that holds the pump. The export style sort of bolts the pump to a bracket on the side of the sending unit assembly.
After walking 3mi in a wool suit in the heat because I don't have a functioning car I decided to call MTS back and see if their pump/sender assembly would fit in an "export" style tank. They swear it does and are shipping one out ASAP and if that doesn't do the trick I'm going to just bite the bullet and buy the original bosch pump from summit. I'll check in after the assembly arrives and let my fellow export tank folks know if it works. Until then...
So here's what arrived
You can see that the important dimensions are virtually the same so I'm going to swap this baby in. Looks like the same thing Drednot had in his pic. If you look in the second pic, the rectangular metal ring that holds the sender down on the tank is not supplied as part of the replacement and needs to be reused. In the third pic you'll see that mine was in bad condition and required a little time on the bench grinder.
I'm in the same boat as you. I just dropped the tank and I'm looking for a new pump or the whole sending unit assembly. My YJ is a '91 renny, and according to my vin# it was built in Canada. Guess that means I have the same export parts... How did the new pump fit? Does my pump and unit look the same as yours?
Yup, that looks like the same thing. So far the new MTS assembly fits but it seems just a little bit shorter. I'm not worried about it though. I shouldn't be running the tank that low anyway that it would make a difference. I'll confirm it's all working when I finally fire it up, just haven't had the daylight to get the tank, skid etc back in. Really the choices came down to A) replace pump with original Bosch pump ($166), B) replace pump, sender and maybe tank with the domestic style OEM stuff ($$$) or C) go with an MTS pump and sender for $188. I chose C.
The line that's longest but shorter is the return. The tanks warp and that bottoms out giving high fuel pressure. That return line being shorter is a good thing. There should be a pickup sock on the pump intake. I don't see it in the pic.
Marty, my tank number is 52007259. MTS YJ site doesn't even list this tank either way whether their sending unit fits or not. Can you check what the number on your tank is? Also, what is the MTS item number for the unit to got? Any idea what brand pump it comes with?
My fuel gauge was way off, which was one reason why I drop the tank. But I measured the resistance on the sending unit varistor, and it shows 5-95ohms. I think that may be correct, any way you could measure your new unit for comparison? Sorry to swamp you with questions, I really appreciate your help. I couldn't even find the Bosch pump anywhere thanks for pointing out the summit website.
I'll be doing some rust proofing while the tank is out, both the skid plate and rear frame, so most likely I won't need a pump for a week or so.
Haha that's the main reason why mine isn't reinstalled yet. You start getting after the rust. I will check the number on my tank and let you know. I actually busted my multimeter so can't do the resistance test for you at the moment. I believe those numbers sound right but that's definitely something you can google. If I'm not mistaken the MTS pumps are made by them. YJSU20F is the sending unit number with pump. Hope this is helpful, Christian
I did some more troubleshooting, and looks like I might also have issues with the ECM. The fuel pump relay doesn't click half the time, so no voltage to the pump. I'll probably still replace the FT since the tank is down. It looks like my pump is the original bosch, and if it lasted 25 years I might as well get the same exact one from summit. The fuel gauge seems to work fine when I move the float, so maybe it was getting stuck on the tray inside the tank.
Renegade you need to troubleshoot just a little more. Posted to your thread. Bpritchard the Jeep was being made in Canada's Windsor plant. I don't know of any difference in the fuel system for export except for the Military Jeeps.
