New Jersey SOA
Here in Jersey our laws really suck... I swear this state's run by Nazi's or something...
Anyway, max vehicle lift is 4".. Anything over that is required to undergo a stability test... Your truck falls off, it's on you. Sucks, doesn't it? I'm just kind of curious if an SOA conversion will be counted as a lift or not... I'm not in the mood to have my YJ come crashing down. Since the conversion can add between 5"-7" of lift, if counted as a lift it'd have to undergo a stability test.. Which I'm sure any SOA converted Jeep would fail. Anyone have experience with this?

Years ago my buddy did a SOA (here in NJ) on a Blazer and he needed to do the tilt test.

Fenders: Front fenders must extend over the full width of the tire tread. Rear tires that are not covered by the fender or other body parts must be equipped with metal protectors or flexible flaps that prevent dirt, debris and water from being thrown. Lights: Headlights shall be mounted no lower than 22" nor more than 54" above the ground. Taillights shall be mounted no lower than 15" nor more than 72" above the ground. Off road lights must be covered while operating on public roads. Doors: I've had experience with this one... Getting my Jeep inspected without doors was a pain in the ***. The first lady told me it was illegal and I've got to get doors on and return with them. Luckily, there was a guy working that actually knew the laws and told her no doors is legal and to proceed with the testing. |

What if your Jeep is from another state? I live in Philadelphia and have a SOA with about 5-6 inch lift with 35's and i want to take it down the shore this weekend but don't want to be stopped.

I'm pretty sure that won't be an issue as long as you modifications are legal in your state and you passed inspection. Seeing as you'll have PA plates, I don't think you'll get stopped.

I've been through the NJ highrise inspection without any issues 3 or 4 times now. Luckily enough, I never had to do a tip test. But I would imagine if your Jeep is setup right, there shouldn't be an issue. They can't go and try to tip it. I always go to the Winslow station.
And don't forget front AND rear mudflaps ![]() |

I have been through the tilt test with 4 inch lift and 33s. They weigh your jeep as it sits flat and then you go on a 15 degree slope where your driver side 2 tires are on the slope and the passengers are on the flat. They then weigh how much weight is transferred to the passenger wheels and this determins if you pass. My son has a rubicon with 5 inches of lift and 35s and they said he just made it because it is heavier then my yj. Dont forget your flares must cover the tire tread and you need mud flaps that go down to the center of the wheels. A 15 degree slope isnt much, when you go offroading you hit much higher angled slopes then this.

My brother in law called the station that does the tilt test. So far they've never had a vehicle roll but if you're the lucky one it's your dime. 30" from the bottom of the open door to the ground requires the "hi lift" sticker for a Jeep Wrangler. Yes, SOA is considered a lift. Anything above stock height is, be it body lift, ( light height here), suspension or tires. There is a maximun height in NJ also. They will turn you away at the lift test station if your vehicle is too high. CAn't remember what it was. PM floridajeepman, he's the one that called.

technicly you can not drive down nj streets with anykind of aux lighting on. unless DOT approved. the "tilt" test is hard for some vehicles. yes they drive you up on a slope but thats not it. they check your brake lines (need to have braided SS) you need mud flaps on exposed tire on rear, they cheak your steering radius compared to stock, and brake time compared to stock. they cheak all suspention parts to unsure they were put on prop. they cheak hights on everything, tails, headlight, and any off road lights (remember in Nj you can not have auz lighting mounted over 42 inch above stock head lights!!! wit our with out covers)
but going back yes SOA is a lift. the police officer i spoke to in Newton said for a jeep stock is 18 inch from flat ground to bottom of rocker. you are allowed 4 inch above that before needing a tip test.

I'm not sure about being pulled over. I've driven pleny of times with my fog lights at night and never had any issues. Just make sure they are pointed down correctly. As for the fenders, I've heard of people going through the inspection with a smaller set of tires (wont stick out as far), but they put the tire size on the 2nd windshield sticker along with the bumper and door heights. Any change to those numbers technically requires a re-inspection. Just make sure the flares completely cover the tire. |
