Ok next update for me...

I can see how cost is rapidly increasing with the mods...

4" Lift by Rough Country $429 is half the cost of the Old Man Emu lift... the Rough Country lift would give me more $$$ to do some of the other mods.

The Rough Country Lift has:

*Front and Rear easy ride Leaf Springs

*Front and Rear U-Bolts

*Bump Stop Snubbers

*Front and Rear Track Bar Brackets

*Power Steering Pitman Arm

*Transfer Case Lowering Kit

*4 Hydro 8000 Shocks (with black boots)

*Extended Sway Bar Links

Would saving the money on the lift for this kit be a good fit? Or is this kit just a piece of crap and I will hate everything about it?

This is all just my opinion but from what I understand about rough country lifts, they are Crap!! Below are a few links to threads talking about them. Form your own opinion on it but I would not get it. You get what you pay for.

I am going to answer the question differently.

Go find a group that is taking rides and go with them with your STOCK rig. If you stay on the easy trails you will not have much trouble and they will give you advise and help. Each ride you can go a little harder trail. Maybe you can talk one of them into letting you try their rig or riding with a more (as you put it) hardcore rig for a short time. I have let guys try mine on the trail and it is definately not hardcore.

You may find that you don't want to stay the easy trail and may want to go Hardcore. When is comes to saving money, a build up for 33 tires is not the same as for 39s. If you find you like it really well, you can skip the middle step and go directly into putting your money into hardcore items.

I appreciate the info on the RC lifts... it seems that it may be worth it to buy the RE kit instead... It is definately not as costly as the OME lift, so the RE should still allow for some extra $$$ for extra mods.

So this is my grocery list so far:

91’ Jeep Wrangler List

4” Rubicon Express STD YJ Lift Kit $635.95
Dropped Pitman Arm YJ from RE $64.95
M.O.R.E Lubeable Shackles $86.50/axle
Slip Yoke Eliminator Kit $260
CV Drive Shaft $285
Labor to install SYE and CV $175
15x8 Rims $
33x12.5 Tires BFGs $
Front Locker (Aussie – Detroit) $250 - $550

I think this should be about all I really need out of an offroader for now. Please add your thoughts about this... especially where to get items and better prices.

Thanks for all of your input.

If your at all mechanically inclined and have patience, you can do the SYE install yourself.

Hmmm.. I am fairly 'inclined'... If there are good instructions and no super special tools needed I can usually get the job done.

Take a look on JC whitney for tire and wheel combos. I got my 33" Mickey Thompson Baja Claws mounted and balanced on my 15x8 rims for $930 delivered. I think they're still running the sale.

Ok I'll bite. If you buy new springs, Look at http://www.bds-suspension.com/php/ProductVehicle.phpbefore you buy. Lifetime warrenty, No Questions Asked.
You wanna do it right the first time? It's really not possible with a Jeep.
No matter what you do the next upgrade impacts the last.
Coachchuck has the best advice. Wheel it and let the Jeep decide what it needs.
You may find out that it goes everywhere you want it to go stone stock. If looks are the thing then open your wallet and go for it.

good list IMHO... couple of thoughts to add...

I first of all would check into the BDS springs and compare. I used to run the RE standard a few years ago when they were pro-comp and they suk. RE claims to have changed, but I hav'nt really read any posts or threads lately that say the current standard springs they sell ride or flex any better than the old ones???

most kits come with sway bar extentions... sway disco's are much more practicle. (note: the RE kit "might" come w/these???)

15x8 rims are just right for 33-35, but U might considder some back spaceing before U buy. Also, I'm not a big fan of BFG's... I run MTR's, but the MT MTZ's are very nice and Toyo MT's have had good review's also. Of course, I'm assuming your looking for a MT and not an AT. If your gona do any mild to hardcore wheeling then IMHO U may as well get a good all purpose MT.

Keep in mind when locking the front, it would be a good idea to have the front D-line ballanced, since it will be spinning all the time... unless U can save up for a selectable... like I wish I had!

Thinking more about the Axles I may look into some with the 4.10 gearing... the Dana 44 or Ford 8.8 if they are financially viable.

I will swing by my local scrapyard and see what they have laying around.

Being new...if I understand right I have a Dana 30 front axle and a Dana 35 Rear? I am sure I have the stock gearing... 3.73? maybe?

correct on the axles. the gearing depends on the motor, if you have a 4cyl you have 4.10's. if you have a 4.0L you probably have 3.07's, not sure though. if you do have a 4.0L go with 4.10's, and if you have a 4cyl go with 4.88's and either axle is a good choice IMHO

I have a '92 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L...

I checked at my local junkyard... he had the axles from a 4-cyl jeep, 4.10 rear axle for $500 with trade of my axle... and the front 4.10 axle housing and gears for $300 with trade... sheesh.. as I read around jeepforums I saw that people got swaps for around $200 -$300 total. I am not going to spend $800 for axles out of a junkyard that have who knows what kind of problems. How much could it be to swap 4.10 gearing into my current axles?

I guess I will keep looking around.

with the old man emu J1R springs all round and the MORE boomerang shackles, 33's will be no problem. for a good ride, get the old man emu shocks too. for better offroad performance, get some nitrogen charged shocks, they push the axle to the ground when its flexed up.
with that setup, you shouldn't need a sye, but i'd strongly recommend one anyways, cheap insurance.
the rear axle, ford 8.8 all the way. get a 4.10 geared one and get a used 4 banger dana 30 for the front, then both axles will be the same gearing near enough (4.10 and 4.11) i put a 8.8 in mine for way cheaper than building up the junk 35. just my opinion...
lockers, save the pennies and get arb's. you wont regret it one time.
