New Jeep Owner

Well i finally did it. Yesterday I bought a 1990 YJ for 3400 canadian with 187 000 kilometers and 3 tops. Its pretty much stock with fuel injection. And now its time to modify. I was thinking that cold air intake and exhaust would be the first steps after I go over it with a fine tooth comb and replace plugs, oil, and filter. I might get some winter tires soon since the snow will fly in about a month here in canada. Any suggestions on intake and exhaust guys? Just so you know im like a kid in a toy store im so pumped about this thing right now. Also i noticed that when at idle the oil pressure sits just below half on the gauge and when driving its at its max. am i going to be looking at new crank bearings or a rebuild in the near future?

heres a link to a pic.

Don't waste your money on snow tires, the BFG AT's that are on it will work fine. Personally I wouldn't bother with the intake/exhaust either, but it's your money. I would save the coin and buy a lift/tires or lock the front axle, something that will help offroad.

Thanks for the input about the exhaust and intake. If it isn't going to add any performance i might as well place my money else where. As far as lifts i will be using this as my regular driver when the snow is down and my motorcycle is away so i dont want to go too high (if there is such a thing). what would you suggest, like 2 inches?

Yea, the exhaust and air intake aren't going to get you much noticable increase. But as far as lift, you can't go wrong with the Rough Country 2.5" kit---- http://www.roughcountry.com/jeep_yj_2.html

But for the same price you could just get the 4" kit...

Good looking Jeep though!

I am in a debate right now of whether to do a SOA or 4'' Suspension.
For the SOA these are the parts I currently already have in my possession...
-Shocks
-Slip Yoke Eliminator
-Rubicon Weld on SOA spring perch kit
-Drop Pitman arm
-A place that will make me a rear driveshaft for $150

If i do the spring over i would buy new springs to do it right the first time. I think I may end up just buying the 4" Roughcountry kit from the link above and if i dont like it i'll sell it and do the SOA. I have plenty of experienced people that could help me.
New 1.5" springs alone for the soa will be over $600 plus whatever else I still need.

What do you guys think i should do?

to add to what i said above...

BamianYJ i see you are in the process of doing an SOA so maybe you will have a little better input since your going through this process right now. Liek what extra expenses am i going to encounter and is this kit going to have everything I need if i decide to go with the 4" suspension lift?

Mine used to be around 20ft/lb at idle .. 35-45 at about 2500 revs.
If it's pegging when driving I would suspect the sender unit (on the engine down by the distributor).

Whats that in metric though? We have goofy metric gauges here in Canada, and i can't even remember what unit of measurement my jeep uses for the oil pressure. When was the last oil change, and have you checked the oil? if its low,or old oil, it can cause lower oil pressure

Me too

Despite all the warnings within this forum, I too have fallen for this addiction called JEEP. I pick up my 94 YJ sometime this evening (11/06/08) or tommorrow morning. I have been reading this forum for a few months now in eager anticipation of finding the perfect jeep to buy. Anyway, I will upload some pics after I get her home and cleaned up. She may require a little "de-chroming."

SOA will give you more flex..that is if you plan to off-road it, what size tires are you going to run?

I've decided on the SOA since I want to run 35's and want more flex than i would get with SUA.

At the moment i have 32.5's but I plan on buying 35's before summer. I'm in Iraq right now and get back in mid January. I will be buying the SOA springs in the next month or so. They are the same price everywhere I have look but i found a website with free shipping on them. I also work at Auto Zone and called my manager the other day. He is going to do the welding and pinion angles to help me out for some beers and steaks afterwards.

The intake and exhaust will free up a few ponies and change the sound, it can also improve mpg a tad. I've allways used gibson catbacks. As far as intakes, I like AEM, they use a dryflow filter that doesn't require oil. You can clean it by tapping it against the palm of your hand, or while your wheeling, it cleans it's self off every time you hit a bump. AEM brute force is an awesome product, much better than the oil based K&N which doesn't filter well. K&N lets in a lot of air and dirt as well. The dryflow filters well and has good flow. Also I run synthetics in my drivetrain, mobil 1 in the engine and royal purple in the tranny, t-case and diffs. Less friction and heat = better mpg and lesss wear on parts. Also helps drivetrain to operate a little cooler. Shifts easier when the tranny is cold and stiff in the winter. The engine is nothing more than a big air pump, the easier air can flow in and out of it the more effient it is, a header also helps. One of the biggest power adders is gears, it feels like a 20 hp bump, but with bigger tires it just equals out. I know it's exciting getting a jeep, I'm excited for you. "good luck with it and and most importaantly, have fun"!!!!!!!
