hey guys! im new here. Ijust bought a 90 jeep wrangler, first off let me give some background on the jeep. 4 inch pro comp lift, shackle flip, shackle lift and 3 inch body lift (gotta go)and 35-14.50 super swamer boggers. i just got it yesterday and took it down the road to go to where i usually 4 wheel and as soon as i hit second gear it wanted to walk all over the road to the point that i felt it was dangerous to drive i can control it somewhat but it will dart different directions at random it seems to get worse when braking.the steering itself is a little loose but i dont think its the entire problem any help would be greatly appreciated and keep in mind im new to jeep suspension so plz no bashing
thanks!
You, brother have a multitude of problems here. You're gonna need a high steer setup and be thankful that you're still alive after driving it. When you said 4" lift I had suspected that it was a sprung under lift. Not SOA.
The over the top steering is the best way to get to where you need to be. Teraflex has a knuckle piece that works the same way. It is a necessary piece to safe steering. Your drag link isn't even straight anymore because of the horrible angles of the steering assembly. You have a huge lift and need to compensate with some $$$
Losing lift is done by either getting smaller springs or springing it under the axles. It's going to be easier for you to correct the steering to make it safe but you can fit those tires under the jeep with those springs under the axle. Is the height and flex working for you? You are actually looking at a dilemma that could be a lot of money going into your jeep based on your needs for the jeep. Honestly, as a wheeler and seldom driven on the road, I would correct the steering and get some different looking shackles up front. It's gonna cost some money but it's the only way to make it safe. Can you take a pic of the rear axle with suspension as well?
I would consider getting rid of that body lift. You have more than enough clearance for those tires. Heck, I'm sprung under and I have enough room for those tires. 36's even.
I'd listen to what Anticanman is saying. I was blown away when I saw the pics of your steering. I have the Teraflex knuckle he is referring to but I use it in a sprung under setup. You Definitely need a cross over steering kit of some sort. I would consider some boomerang shackles for the front and back. It will make it look a hell of a lot better and steer as well.
so for starters a tereflex high steer knuckle, and boomerand shackles ( i can make those easy im a welder by trade) and who makes a good strong tie rod? will theese things fix my problem?
They will fix the steering problem, yes. There may still be some discrepancies because it will not be perfect but a heck of a lot better than it is now. What's going on with the rear driveshaft? Got a better ID of that rear axle?
i read up on that steering knuckle and it says i might have to update my caliper and a few other things up front you guys ever had to do that on theese older yj's
I bet you dont have SYE... with a lift that tall you need SYE and a CV driveshaft so you can stop breaking u-joints. Do you have a D35 rear? I would have stayed away from this jeep. To many red flags and wasn't built right.
I would agree he needs a SYE but I think the reason he is snapping u joints would be because of not having a anti wrap bar.
A picture of the rear diff from the back would help us figure out what axle you have in the rear.
I ran the Tera Flex knuckle SOA with a lunch box locker.
I lost alot of steering radius with that knuckle, I would not recomend it. It is better than what you are running now though.
