new clutch or over looking something?
'93 with an ax-5 internal slave.
About 4 months ago I was in need of a clutch very badly, and my internal slave cyl. was leaking pretty bad. I got a new internal slave and put it in..but I didn't have the money for a new clutch at the time. I put a USED clutch in from a tj that I had parted out and at the time had 60k on the clutch. After putting it back together the clutch pedal was very soft, and the clutch didnt start disengaging until 3/4 of the pedal was let out but it worked...and I was back on the road for awhile. I have since bought a full clutch kit..and I had planned to put it in this weekend until I started thinking about a few things, which bring me to my questions. Before I put the used clutch in...the pedal still had the same amount of travel in it before the clutch disengaged. It starts disengaging 3/4 of the way off of the floor...and isnt fully disengaged until the pedal is completely out. It has a new slave cylinder in it already. If I put this new clutch, pressure plate, and pilot bearing in...is the clutch going to start disengaging as soon as the pedal is coming off of the floor like it SHOULD? Or is there something else I'm over looking in the equation? maybe the clutch and the slave cyl. are fine..and its something else? The master cyl. doesn't appear to be leaking because I dont have a wet spot going down my fire wall. Maybe its leaking internally? Any insight would be helpful before I go and spend all this time replacing a clutch that might not be the issue. Thanks, and sorry this post is so long!

air in the lines is a possible reason for a spongy pedal. |

x2 on air in the lines. clutches are a major PITA to bleed after replaced. the smallest air bubble in the system will screw with it
could also be a misadjusted master cylinder?? |

It could be air in the lines...but I bled that sucker with a friend giving me a hand.........and we bled that thing for 3 hours. I just couldnt get the pedal to have any more pressure at all. I can push the clutch pedal all the way in with no problem being barefoot, and only pushing it in with my big toe. So its possible theres air in the line, but we bled that thing for forever.
I'll replace the master cyl. but will a master make your clutch pedal feel like that if its going bad? I've honestly never had a master go bad....and it still function at all. Mine went bad and left me stranded.

Make sure your firewall is not rotted and that the master cylinder iznt moving back and forth with it. This was a tremendous problem in broncos i believe.
