Neep help ID'ing odd engine code

I have between cylinders 2 & 3 a machined base with the code:

8 03 C X 30.

I figure (from reading),
8=1988
03 = March
C=258 2bbl
X=???
30=30th day of March

Does anyone know what the X next to the C means? And do I have the correct meaning for C, or is CX a different code?

I've looked at a 87-88 FSM, even though this jeep is an 89, different AMC engine code lists, etc. but still can't find it.

I do know it has a rebuilt motor in it from a engine builder in Spokane, not sure if it's the original that came with the 89 or a replacement.

Help appreciated. Thx!

This is all I can find

(MX = a 4.0L 8.7:1 compression ratio engine with multi-point fuel injection system).
The HX is coming up as this: HX = a 2.5 liter = [150 CID] 9.1:1 compression ration engine with a multi port fuel injection system.
The YJ got the 258ci engine through 1990, then it finally went to the HO (ChryCo controls, OBD-I) 242ci. It was the last vehicle to be produced with the 258ci AMC engine.

If a fresh yj just started its 258 2bbl back on march 30th of 1988 what would it be doing(x)

The answer is obvious...

Winning
