Need suggestions on my 95 yj
I have a 95 wrangler and i need some suggestions and answers to a few things. Im pretty new to all this jeep stuff so i dont know much. Right now it is pretty much stock besides 31 bfgs and a 2in body lift. A few things i would like to do is get 33 x 12.50s and a 4 in suspension. But as it is being a 4 cylinder many people say it wont pull the 33s. any suggestions on what i should do. or any mods you have done to yours and pictures.
please post any information i could use whatever i could get.

check out 4bangerjp.com. Good forum and info on 4 cyl jeeps. Geared properly the 4cyl will do what a 6cyl can.

I have a 2.5, 2 inch BL and a 2.5 RE lift and am currently running 33x12.50's as a non daily driver and it does ok. I can get the spedo to read 70+ but it definitely slows down a lot on windy days and uphil. I have been running it like this with stock gearing for a while now and I am ok with it.
Changing the gears to 4.88 will take it to stock, but it is not that cheap.
What are you looking to get out of it?

I think it is great 4 wheeling, the low gears have no problem with turning the 33's its just 5th gear that is worthless.

I've got a 95 I4 that's sitting on ProComp X-Terrains that are 33''x12.50x15, and running 4.88 gears, front and rear on a 6" coil spring conversion suspension lift. That being said, for you what you want to do, I believe it's a pretty decent set up. With that engine, tire, and gear set up, I've had my rig sunk up to the frame in the mud and never gotten stuck. Off-road, it's great, I've been able to hold my own with 350's for the most part. Obviously there's a power difference between the two, but hey, I'm happy with my little 4 banger. On the road, like Vingpin said, going up hills and windy days will probably keep you in 4th gear, but I routinely hit 70-80 on my way to work and interstate driving. Also like Vingpin said, when I had the stock gears of 4.10, 5th gear was useless unless you drove off a cliff. However, like I said, if you have the I4, you can lift it, put tires on it, and re-gear it and have yourself one hell of a little beast. Want more info on my set up, shoot me a message!

You've got your answer. I have the little 4 banger with 33's. And like they said it does fine off road with the stock 4:10's but could use a little more. That's why I'm going with 4:88's after the first of the year. I do run 5th gear on the interstate and it does fine...... that's going downhill. The 4:88's will bring you back to being close to stock performance. Maybe a little better.

I have a 4'' suspension lift and 33x12.5 on my 4 banger and its completely stock. And guess what.... it's my daily driver. I go about 30 miles a day back and forth to school and it holds up well. I get about 14-15 mpg and the only thing is that I do a lot of downshifting to gain some power up hills and stuff. Its not as bad as everyone says. I do some mudding too and its great. I was looking into a re-gear but I'm happy with the way it runs. As for 5th gear, I drove from Western Massachusetts to Cape Cod (150+ miles) this summer and I might have put it in 5th once and only for maybe 30 miles when I really opened her up. I would say that I went about 65-70 mph the way there. I just stayed in the slow lane. But the whole way there was great, no problems. Started to overheat when we got into traffic but cooled off quickly.

Not alot of folks like the 4bangers for some reason... I can't figure it out. I love small motors that last forever. Mine has 140k and doesn't have a drop of oil on it. To make up those extra 2 cylinders one word comes to mind GEARS! A good base is your gears in the axle. That should be step one. Then you can step up to a 4:1 t-case. Or if ya wanna get real nasty throw another tranny in there. Thats how most of the Yota guys do it with the 22re. I had a 4runner with the tires I have now and two cases, 4.10 in the axles and had a crawl ratio of 272:1 I could go up a wall no prob.

I run TrXus 33x12.5's on stock gearing with the 4" lift from Rough Country.
I still use 5th gear above about 60mph. 155K on the clock. Fun to drive, fun to wheel.Check my profile for further mods.

I allways felt the best setup for the 4 banger for on and off road was a 31x10.50 and 4:56 gears. Thats what I ended up with on my 02 wrangler 2.5. I wasn't worried about looking mean, I was more interested in being practicle. It would climb a tree and was pretty peppy on road. I agree the 4 cylinder is a great jeep engine, with proper gearing it will go anywhere you want to take it and some places you don't want to take it ha ha.

Very well said. I kick myself often for doing a 4" lift and 33x10.50. I wish I had done a 2.5 old man emu, 1" body 1'' mml, flat belly and 31's. Thats a nice setup and the limiting factor will be the driver.

Im running a 95' 4 piper with 31 x 10.5 on 15" rims Mickey Thompsons on a 2.5" suspension lift. she runs like a frenzied crack addict. I didnt change the gear insode the axle at all.
2.5 is my limit, ive seen 3' and up, I dont really care for that all too much.
Happy jeepin.
