Need Help with Starter Relay Wiring

I've searched threads pertaining to starter relay issues and couldn't find anything that would help with my particular problem.

All of the wiring diagrams that I have for the '89 YJ contain different color codes for the wires as well as different connections for them.

Below I've drawn my own diagram from the one closest to what I think is on the '89 YJ I'm working on.



Here is a diagram I've drawn with the actual colors of the wires and their locations.



I've replaced the following; Ignition Control Module, Coil, Cap, Rotor, Wires, Plugs.

There is absolutely no spark at all from the coil but, the engine cranks very healthy!

I did remove the wires from the starter relay and cleaned the wires and the relay itself. I visually inspected the wires and the relay and they are all in excellent condition.

Is it possible that I may have connected a couple of the wires to the wrong blade terminals allowing the engine to crank but not fire?

I'd greatly appreciate any help!

Your diagram appears correct for the starter relay wiring.
(In case you don't have it there is a diagram of the starter relay and the wiring diagram below)

You should check to be sure you have power on the Yellow wire on the coil when the key is in the Run & START positions.

Does your tachometer move at all when you crank the engine?
If it doesn't then it points to a problem with the ignition module not being happy. If the tach needle moves up a bit when cranking then the ignition module should be happy.

I's possible that the pickup coil in the distributor isn't working and failing to trigger the ignition module to generate the spark pulse.

your showing that both sides of your coil are hot on run?

Yes they are. That's why I'm wondering if I might have connected a couple of the wires wrong at the relay.

Does you starter relay have a ground wire on it? It looks like it doesn't in your diagram. In any event it looks like you might get your answer here for a few bucks:
Never used this service so I do not know if they are worth the cost.

relay wiring

Got a new starter relay today and still having problems myself..
Here's what I got.
big terminal marked "bat" is hot all the time.
terminal marked "F" is 12v hot when key is on.
terminal marked "I" is 12v hot when key is in start position.
terminal marked "G" is what I can only figure to be a body ground?(black wire with white stripe).
and terminal marked "sol" I get nothing no matter what position key is in.

Oh and did I mention my jeep will not start (key in any position)even with the new relay.
I'm guessing the sol terminal should be 12v hot in the start position but isn't any ideas?

You have no idea what is wrong with your jeep. How about you tell us what your problem is. Then we may be able to help you diagnose the problem.
By that I mean is the starter turning over but the engine is not firing up? Or I get some sound or clicking from the starter, or I get nothing wehen turn the ignition to start...come on throw us a bone here!

hey guys, Im having the same problem, let me see If I can explain it more.
I have an 87 yj 4.2 upgraded carb mc2100 upgraded ign. coil cap, rotor, wires.
Sat I started the jeep to go out, warmed to an idle then shut off. does not start now. It cranks over but no spark from the coil. Replaced so far..pick up coil, ign module and the coil and the coil wire.
Now someone offered some help.. Im getting power to the coil. just not a spark. The last test I did.. I ran a test light to the red side of the coil put the key in the run position, got a bright light, when I cranked it the light went dull. from the info its supposed to be the other way. Ive been on this too long Im not understanding anymore need more eyes.
starter sol...? or wire in between?

Sorry to bring this back from the semi-dead, but I am having starter issues as well.

I am doing the 2.5 to 4.0 swap with a wiring harness and computer from a 93 YJ. I'm not exactly sure which wires connect to which parts of the starter (yes I am a newbie) and I can't figure it out from the diagrams in the back of my Haynes manual.

When I turn the key to the start position all I get is the e-brake light and the seat belt lights on my dash, as well as the heater fans running under the dash. When I turn the key to the start position noting happens at all except that the fans turn off which the key is in 'start'

Does anyone have a good picture of their starter so I can try to imitate the wiring on my Jeep?? It would be really helpful, thanks.

OP, did you replace the relay? im not sure i understand whats being asked. only asking because i just went through some starting issues and replaced almost everything in the loop only to find out that when i replaced the starter relay i never put the clip fully on.

Check your fusible links and make sure one is not blown. Also, check to make sure your fuses in the fuse block (under the dash) are good as well, then check to see if you have power to the terminals in the fuse block that are involved with starting. If you need diagrams let me know I have some pretty thotough ones I can post.

I'd like to look at those diagrams if you do not mind... I have an 87 4.2
