need help with lockers
 
if i have a stock 1990 yj, what r the specs for the gearing and such. i am looking at lockers but know nothing about this. any help will b appreciated

I have a 90YJ with 4banger and 5speed. I run 4:88 gears and an Aussie in the front D30. Never an issue and the added traction is awsome.

You've got the 2.4L, so most likely your axles are 4.10 ratio. There's lots of threads and info on lockers, so searching will probably answer most of your questions.

A lot on gearing depends on your tire size, final tire size not current size

First questions I'd ask is what are you looking to get out of your modifications, what mods do you currently have on the Jeep (IE lift, tire size, etc), are your axles currently stock or have they been swapped out for something stronger, etc, etc..

Answer all those and you should be able to get some good answers from the dudes on here.

i would never lock the dana 35 rear. and i would never again buy a "lunchbox" style (lock-right, aussie...) locker for a street driven Jeep. go detroit, or a selectable style. :2cents:

this is going to be another one of those threads that turns into the OP talking about throwing 60's or 9's under the jeep :rolleyes:

im just a rookie and know nothing haha. i am getting a 2.5 in lift and 31's shortly. do lockers keep the jeep in gear cuz i was doing some light offroad and i hit went over a curb sized bump and it popped out of gear. will lovkers solve this?

No

Lockers keep the wheel with the most traction spinning and providing propulsion Vs. an open differential which will transfer power to the wheel with the least traction (IE if one tire is in the air you will go no where)

Sounds like he has a loose bracket on the transmission or just happened to hit it just right that made it pop out of gear....its nothing that a locker will do.

If getting unstuck is the issue...
Get a winch.

A locker is just as likely to get you MORE stuck as to get you unstuck.

A locker will get you deeper into the stuck before you get...stuck, now deeper in the hole than without the locker. More stuck.

A locker won't hold up in the rear stock dana 35, you will waste your money. It's not if it will break, but when. You should upgrade to the ford 8.8 with a locker.

I'm gonna go ahead and say it. OP: if you don't know what lockers are, you don't need them. Base your build on what you need on the trail. If you come back and say "I thought I had 4wd, why do the wrong wheels spin so much when I'm stuck?" then I would recommend a locker. In the meantime, put the catalog down and go for a drive. :D

i just re-read my earlier post, and im sorry if i sounded like a jerk, i didnt mean to. lol

but i would agree, that you most likely dont need lockers yet. There is ALOT of reading for you to do on the interwebs, when you arent driving the jeep just click around here on jeepforum, or any other place for that matter.

Before you know it, you will be hip deep in the most interesting article you have ever read, and learning a ton about your jeep in the mean time.
