nates 8.8 build on the cheap, yeah right

Alright my dad gave me the okay to start the 8.8. im just trying to build an 8.8 with 4:10s or 4:11s what ever they come in and open carrier.Just trying to get it under my jeep. My dad got the 8.8 a couple of years ago and never put it in his, so i bought a jeep and im puting a Rough Country 2.5 Lift in so he said we might as well through the 8.8 in there . I about wet my self but the reality hit when it had 2:73 gears.

The free isn't worth it. For $99-$150 you can buy one that already has 4:10 gears in it and 31 spline shafts.

Go to www.car-part.com and look one up. There are many near you for $150. Cheaper if you have a u-pull.

Keep looking. Unless you can re-gear it yourself it will cost a pile of $$ and end up only a little better than what you have.

Is it even the right width?

If it were me - I'd look into selling it & then buying an Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer/Mazda Navajo 8.8.

If you decide to keep it - take a look in these areas & correct where necessary.

Wheel studs. Make sure they aren't too long or too short
WMS-WMS. Check to see if it's close to what you want
When its apart getting regeared, weld the axle tubes to the center section
When it's apart, install new axle seals & outer axle bearings
Rebuild/replace the calipers, pads, rotors
Sand/wire wheel that beyotch down & get some paint on it
Install a diff guard/cover. The factory one is foil thin
Toss the tone ring in the nearest dumpster
Remount the axle breather to the top of the tube if you wish so its out of harms way
I have no idea if it has an LSD, or if you're planning on keeping it, but if you do, fill it with the proper fluid
Use a master install kit when regearing

Or...like I said earlier, just get one from out of one of the vehicles I mentioned with 4.10's installed. Much easier.

And regearing it yourself will still cost more than just buying an explorer rear that has the right gears and 31 spline shafts. Use the mustang rear as a boat anchor and you'll be money and time ahead.

unless you can get new gears and a new carrier for free, still not worth it.

You'll want to go bigger, besides if you can overbuild something while keeping it just as cheap and easy why wouldn't you?

Get the 100 dollar Explorer rear! You will spend that much to replace the missing brake parts from that Mustang POS.
